Friends dog bit someone

That doesn't apply to this case however.

The 'inside the home' is for visitors and other occupants' protection

Yea, I was just about to post that link and as you can see, it's taken on a case by case basis and it says 'unlikely' not a definite no and even in the case of a garden bite it's only 'maybe liable'

I'm just pointing out that it's not an out of hand dismissal of the case, if the dog is a known biter at the mailbox then it is the owners responsibility to do something about it, as it may be a RM worker or a leaflet distributor or any of many other legitimate reasons why someone has their hand in your letterbox

Not a hope in hell of winning that claim.
Fact is, she's a moron for trying to retrieve the letter, I would knock on the door and/or post a note explaining that you put something through by accident and to post it through next door.

This isn't the dogs fault.

As usual, peoples "opinion" on this matter (which is worthless) and the actual law (which is the important bit) are two different things.

Dogs biting peoples hands through the letterbox is covered in the Dangerous Dogs Act 2014 - Which now applies to all breeds from a Rottweiler to a chihuahua - and it's not limited to RM workers

Well if it didn't bite her when posting the letter, and only nipped her when her arm was through the letter box - I would think the court may rule in the home owners favour.

Op's not mentioned how bad the bite was yet.

How bad the injury is/was will likely make the difference here.

Also was the dogs owner at home at the time, and did this woman ring the door bell. If she hadn't then she's hardly taking all necessary steps to protect herself.

Well if it didn't bite her when posting the letter, and only nipped her when her arm was through the letter box - I would think the court may see that differently

"may" being the operative word. What she was doing wasn't unreasonable really.

no, but if this is deemed as acceptable, reasonable behaviour, then whats to stop toerags posting the "wrong letter" in your letter box then having a rummage round to see if theres anything worth nicking.

Nothing I guess (I love when GD stretches scenarios to breaking point :D )but I'm not sure what you have worth knicking that is a) within reach of your letterbox and b) would fit though it :p
