Nvidia Ampere might launch as GeForce GTX 2070 and 2080 on April 12th

I've been using a 1070 and OC'd 6600K since mid 2016, so upgrading in mid 2018 makes sense to me. It's a tricky situation and completely dependent on pricing. If the 2070 is on par with a 1080Ti but cheaper as common sense would suggest (as the 1080Ti's are massively overpriced), then it's decent upgrade and worth the wait. However, if it isn't at the very least on par performance wise and/or nearly as expensive, then it makes the situation a bit more complicated.

I'm hoping for:

2070 > 1080Ti = £600 (so around the same price as the 1080 on release but cheaper than the current 1080Ti)
2080 = £800ish

If that happens I'll probably go with the 2070 plus upgrade to 8700K and play in 1440p. However, if the 2080 comes in at around £600-700ish (dreaming) and 2070 £500ish, the 2080 will look way more attractive.

Right so your on an overclocked 6600K and a 1070 and then going on to say I'll probably go with the 2070 and an upgrade to a 8700K to play in 1440p after quoting prices of 2070 =£600 and 2080 = £800

Are you insane?

All you need to do to go to 1440p would be to upgrade your core equip with new mobo, processor and ram. I have an OC'ed 6700K and a 1070 and I run 1440p quite confortably. Why would you want to spend crazy GFX card money to play 1440p. If you had said I must have 4K 60FPS and no compromises then I would say yes, why not...if you absolutely need 4K and it's your money so go enjoy....but you said 1440p......that doesnt make sense to me at all.

Oh and those are the prices you are hoping for.....please hope more for lower prices. Both Nvidia and AMD are loving people like you right now. JUST SAY NO!
:D

What is your average fps with that setup?

I honestly didn't realise the 1070 could perform that well at 1440p, however review testing does suggest that it can struggle at times e.g. average of 50 fps in Rainbow 6 with max settings. That said, I can sell my 1070 for near £500 thanks to mining. Chuck in an extra couple of hundred to pick up a 2070 or 2080, surely makes sense from a future proofing point of view?

No need to upgrade memory as I already have 32GB. It's just the CPU/mobo and potentially GPU.

I'm going to buy the first card capable of ultra > FPS 4K HDR that leaves consoles in the dust with no hope in a decade. And then I'll hope that some half-decent games are released for PC.

I am not one to look at FPS numbers all the time, I just go on what my game feels like to play. But I will post a few FPS numbers for you in next few days (I am on late shift this week and a bit busy as wife isnt well at the mo - so not much gaming since last week :().

I usually play Battlefield 4, Battlefield 1 and the rest of my drives are full of VR stuff at the moment (Runs VR sweet as well). If you look at my spec I also run on Freesync monitor, so this is without VRR right now too. Get back to you ASAP. :)

That's insanely expensive, a good £200 ish more than current 1070's (without mining inflation).

I'm hoping the 1080i will drop within my budget when the new cards come out, I have 2 x 7970's in Xfire just now but am going the 1 card route next time.
Hopefully £600 - £800 should cover a decent next Gen card if the 1080i is still at silly prices.

That would be the top end pricing. Would think 2080 will come in at £700 and 2070 at £450-500. Can see a massive shortage for months, mind.

someone said 1080 is only 10 % faster then 980ti ? what , its more like if u check reviews 30 to 35 % stock vs stock , when both clocked its around 20 % +

You really need G-Sync with a 1070 at 1440p if you want to keep the settings up - otherwise you are going to have to make some compromises in some games. I'm pretty happy with my combination of 1070 and G-Sync 1440p but if I was gaming as actively as I used to I'd probably have upgraded by now - but still I can play The Division with very few compromises and mostly 60-70fps which is fine for PVE stuff and PVP is pretty meh in the game so I don't bother with that.

That's the plan and the Asus PG278QR is top of my list.

If the 2080 FE comes in at around £600 i'll definitely be snapping one up.

Not sure what reviews you were looking at but I compared my 980ti at the time with what reviews were showing and in the games I was playing at the time it was no where near 20% - if it had been 20%+ i would have gotten one

Anyone know if these new cards will have vrr or hdmi 2.1?

Wouldn't mind new tv at some point and the new Samsungs are coming with vrr.

I only paid like £430 for my 1080 so would get my money back if I sold it and put the money towards a 2070.
