Nexus Tyres - I’m stuck with some it appears, any good?

On the road....
Took my e38 for its MOT, it failed on front ball joints, not surprising, I’d noticed a slight - but common on the e38 - “shimmy / wobble” on the wheel @50mph, so it’s having those replaced.

Annoyingly though, both my rears have got advisories due to damage on the inside tyre wall (which I wasn’t aware of) so I’ve elected to change them given I’m on a long journey tomorrow and knowing of the damage isn’t something I’ll go with, the annoyance is though after phoning around a fair few tyre places , due to the “unusual size” - 255/45/18 - I couldn’t obtain anything decent for tomorrow morning for fitting so, instead of the £62(!!) ditchfinders he’d got in stock my fitter has got two Nexus tyres arriving in the morning...

I’m dubious to put it mildly ,but, he said to read a few reviews and they don’t seem to come off too bad to be fair.

Anybody got any experience themselves of these?

Whilst I’m not particularly familiar with Nexus as a brand, I do know my partners Dads 2015 Kia Sportage came from the factory with Nexus tyres as oem and her Nissan Note has them also, I’m assuming they are not that bad?

Anyway, I’m stuck with the bloody things, just wondered what the concensus was on them?

I had Nexus winter tyres on my old Sportage, they were brilliant. On a BM though, not so sure...

This is what I’m wondering tbh, although to be fair it’s an old car and I don’t particularly push it - it’s more of a wafter and I’m happy in the main to waft in it.

The fitter said he’d put them on many Audi’s & BMW’s and they were well regarded in the trade (surely he would say that!) although he did have them on his own 335d which I thought reassuring given his job and - I’m assuming- his access to all maner of rubber at favourable rates?

My lexus came with nexen n8000s on the back, same thing, MOT fail so the owner put what ever they had and they did advice those. They're not that bad, not loud, car feels fine etc so I'd say try them and see how you like them. I'll be putting some new rubber all around but just because I'll be needing to replace my fronts soon and will get different alloys.

If it was me I would have gone for the ditchfinders for today and proper tyres for the future, depending on how bad the 'damage' on the old tyres was I possibly would have even kept them until new tyres arrived.

While they would be ok i would just order some premium tyres in from Camskill or similar then have them fitted.
The E38 deserves better.

That's what I assumed he is going to do. Those tyres are more of a necessity for today.

The thread is a reminder to check tyres on all sides, something I don't do all that often.

very true my mot had the same an advisory for the inside on the fronts they were avons and still had about 5mm on them, i replaced them with F1 eagles.

I'm sure you'll be fine unless you're planning on speeding around

Why do people say this? It's odd really, there seems to be this sort of thought process that you only need decent tyres if you are 'speeding around' - what does that even mean?

Firstly, you also only partially quoted my post - nice work.

Secondly, assuming he only wanted them for today, given that it is his cherished car, then if he doesn't intentionally push them beyond their limits (for example, by speeding - do you require an essay of all possibilities?) I'm sure his journey will be OK.

It's not hard to work that out really, is it? What else did you think I meant by what I wrote? Or are you just being obtuse for the sake of it?

There is absolutely no way he only wants them for today - otherwise he'd have opted for the 60 quid ditch-finders and thrown them in the bin next week. He is presumably intending to run these tyres. I'm surprised anyone thinks from what he's posted that he only intends to use them for one weekend?

I read them as costing £62 and that's what I based it on, in which case I retract what I said. I was probably a bit snappy there, apologies :p

Nothing wrong with Nexens (N Blue HD iirc), ran them for 16000 miles on my old Corolla through all sorts of weather (inc snow), and had no issues or concerns about grip. I actually feel they performed better than the BluSport Responses I had on before; definitely had more grip pulling away in the wet, and more grip on snow - where the Dunlops were a bit squirrely.

Nexus, not Nexen?

Never heard of Nexus, maybe you mean Nexen?

Yes, Nexen! :o

Looked through it’s history last night, the tyres on it now have been on for six years, the fronts are getting low so will probably swap all four when they get changed.

Bought them because other than £62 ditch finders these are all he could get for today, they are cheap compared to the Continental SC5’s that are on it now -£120 each instead of £195 each- I’ll see how I find them, if I find them not very good (I’ll soon know in this weather) then yes I’ll take a hit and change them otherwise I might well run them.

Used my partners Note yesterday whilst mines in the garage - which has them all round - and on the way home I deliberately threw it around a bit and didn’t feel the tyres were poor at all, yes a Nissan Note isn’t a 7 Series but equally I don’t throw that around nor drive it particularly fast.

If they suit me, I’ll keep them, might even commit the cardinal sin of putting some on the front too, if not I’ll probably end up somewhere between the Continental and these, maybe Hankook given the reviews I’ve read of them.

I’ll give them a couple of weeks to bed in (around 250 miles tops) and see then.

Agreed, try them and see how you like them. People are quick to hate on tyres without trying whereas I found my cheap kumho ku39s performed as well as my eagle f1s for double the price.

Fair point. People hated Toyo Proxy but I found them OK on my fairly light car.
