My 99 honda civic just doesn't cut it for long journeys and space anymore. In need of something much more substantial in the rear ;)

My budget isn't huge. I'm talking £1200 max here. I know a bargain can be had at this price and I don't really like buying new cars. In come the volvo v70 and the saab 9-5. I've seen a few of these hovering around this price with seemingly good histories. One guy I was speaking to the last couple days talked so fondly of his 97 v70T5 that he ended up keeping it!

What I'm currently looking at is a 99 V70XC with around 120k on the clock for £1000. I've been told to steer clear of the XC models on on the first gens as the AWD tends to break and the air suspension is expensive to replace?

Like to hear all your guys thoughts. Any possible alternatives etc? I need something that is reliable, roomy enough to chuck a mattress or the like in the back from time-to-time, and not be a slouch on the road.

Volvo's eat suspension components, otherwise they're pretty reliable tanks. I bought my mate a £250 '98 V70 last month which i then put £80 into to get it through and MOT and it's bang on.
I just bought myself a 960 which I absolutely love already.

£250?? That no bad. The one i've been looking at is the V70XC (98). He's asking for £1000 and its got 120k on the clock. He's looked after it though and has FSH.

Skoda Octavia or Superb. Both are massive compared to their rivals. Modeo also has a good sized boot.

Coming from a Civic to an Octavia though will be like entering the TARDIS for the first time.

Yep skoda octavia. Even the hatch is a massive boot. It's basically a mid sized car with the boot of a large car.

Curve ball Citroen C5 estate? Dad has two of these, one from 2003 , the other is about 2008 seem solid, he uses it for work (building work) so caries things like tools, pipework , bathroom and kitchen appliances

Couldn’t recommend a V70 highly enough, budget for a steering rack on earlier ones though, a very common failure.

Otherwise pretty bomb proof and hearse like with the back seats down.

Yeah, we like to play games. He gave me £400 to get him a car, I got him a car, a years MOT and some money left for tax/insurance.
