Snowmageddon-Britain running out of Gas

Wonderful how this happens on the same day that Denmark, a substantially colder country, has said that they're stopping all inland mining and drilling for oil/coal! They are far, far, far, far, far ahead of us.

Lol wut? Denmark's climate is pretty much the same as ours.

Maybe you would be happy paying their 60% income tax rate, 25% VAT and an increased tax rate on everything else :p

Denmark is much colder, although not as cold as the other Scandinavian countries

Copenhagen January High: 3C
London January high: 9C

Ah, selective stats! You've chosen a city in one of the warmest regions of our country vs a city in one of the coldest of Denmark.

Why don't you try engaging some intelligence - average high annual temperature for whole of the UK is 13.5 degrees. Denmark - 12 degrees. 1.5 degrees average is not substantially colder.

Or shall we throw somewhere like Cairngorm in the mix which has an average temperature of 0 in Dec-March. Substantially colder than Copenhagen! Brr, we must be in the arctic.

No. Solar panel technology is not efficient enough yet for that to happen. Most solar panels on people's houses, for example, are fairly inefficient. Less than 14% of the energy that reaches them will be converted to electricity. As the technology improves though, and it is improving year on year, then having solar panel power plants in the UK might be a viable option even considering our weather, which isn't great for sunshine outside of the summer months.

Solar panel efficiency is highly variable. the panels installed on homes are as cheap as possible and at the low range. You can buy panels up to 27% but they are more expensive and the costs tend to outweigh the efficiency gains

What rubbish is this?

I Slected the capitals where in both countries most people live (in the UK, London, the SE and surroundings) Summer averages have little impact in winter heating costs!

Most people don't live in London. They live in the rest of the UK. So choosing an area that has 15% of the population isn't representative of the country as a whole. Take Birmingham, that's 7 degrees (already narrowing that gap!) or maybe somewhere like Edinburgh or Glasgow which are 6 degrees, the gap is narrower still.

Also people don't just use their heating in one season so year round averages are applicable...

Well, OK, slight exaggeration :p

But, this to me does illustrate the dangers inherent in not being self sufficient in Energy and developing an over reliance in "Renewables"

Now we are at peak demand, and have the greatest need for reliable energy supplies (Make no mistake, though it is unlikely at the present, extended power cuts in this type of cold weather WOULD result in many, many, deaths), AND having to compete with continental neighbors for supply, I wonder just how much of our needs are being met by windmills and solar panels. (The figure "Almost None" comes very much to mind)

With the current wind strength, wind turbines account for up to 40% of total electricity generation.

*Source - On Jan 17 2018 wind produced 13.6GW with total energy production from all sources being 32.7GW for that day.

heh first world problems....

4 inches of snow, few days with temps bellow 0, and the country shuts down.

Mainland Greece had almost 1.5m of snowfall north of Lamia since Sunday, everything is moving and life goes on.
True you need wheel chains but that's expected on mainland Greece in winter between Oct and Mar. (hence is compulsory)

On the other hand, mainland Greece south of Lamia, has 13C at night :) and from Saturday I will enjoy, and for the next six weeks, the nice warm weather front from Sahara, keeping at bay the siberian cold.

What makes it worse is, we’ve had a lot worse than this. Yet look how the country is supposedly behaving.

Definitely Balgan bay in Swansea, the only other direct off take for a power station of the Nts in Wales is Pembroke, unless he's commuting to Bristol every day.

Not sure what flows Balgan is pulling as its one of the few sites I haven't been to today but Pembroke power station is pulling nicely.
:)

I can’t show you the screenshots but on average the UK uses around 33-35GW and runs with a base load of Nuclear (15-18% of the total), gas being the second at anywhere up to 40%) then coal at typically 1-2%, followed by the renewables which vary depending on time and day.

This would be a typical day, so looking at coal as an example today.... there would be 10-12GW of coal on the system which is 10x the normal amount. Why? Because gas prices are high and they’ve stockpiled while it was cheap to mine.

Most gas stations will be off for commercial reasons, not supply constraints. That said, I’m not national grid so they may well want to limit gas supply because every household with a gas supply will have a boiler on and they’ll want to prioritise domestic supply over industrial.

Unless we start running out of electricity I'm not troubled as this estate doesn't even have a gas supply. Electricity is darn expensive though £150 for last month's bill.

So what, you are running 1.5kwh for the entire month on average?

Your problem is electric heating, either that or you are mining crypto or growing weed lol

Yeah. Who can forget Nov 2010?
Had to break 1 metre deep ice over 40 (x3 wide) metres distance to move my car out of the driveway and the estate to get to the super market for supplies....

And why I had to dig that distance, because the other two houses the road at the estate goes through replied to me "we do not need to clear out front doors because we do not want to go out of the house".

Next morning decided all brave to go to work, -19C and the ice had clamped the poor Mini and couldn't move it.

But this weather front is pathetic. What aggravates it though, is the councils not clearing the main roads.
Major road between Gainsborough and Scunthorpe, and is closed second day today.
While West Lindsey council cries there are no money to even collect the green bins 15 weeks a year, without paying extra. (FYI I pay £1500 on council tax which hasn't stopped going up since 2008, regardless the "freeze" between 2010-2015).

Pathetic.

Muahah, too much overclocking and benching maybe :p
Especially if he has a Vega 64 :P
