Megaflo boiler query

I've moved into a new build and have a "Megaflo Unvented Direct Eco" cylinder boiler. Water pressure is intense. Guessing direct means straight from mains? Showers are crazy good.

Since moving in I have had both mains switches turned on behind it. They appear to have wires leading to 2 titanium immersions attached on side of the boiler.

My question is do I need both on? Or just one? It's just me in the property. If I do switch one off (guessing 2 might only be needed for loads of hot water demand) which one should I switch off? The top or bottom one?

It cut-off on me recently and I had to get an electrician to come and reset the thermal reset cut off. Once done it filled up and heated water ok. Hoping it doesn't occur again. Anyone know what might be the cause?

There are no timers for it. Just 2 mains switches. So when both on I am guessing it heats up the max amount of water. Perhaps that was the issue.

The top immersion is usually used for a "boost", and the bottom is usually set to heat overnight. If you are on an Economy 7 meter, it makes sense to heat using the bottom immersion overnight only, as it will be cheaper.

You may want to add a time clock to it so that it only heats up the cylinder once per day. Although modern unvented cylinders are quite efficient, so heat loss is very low from them. In any case, the internal thermostat will switch the immersion off once the cylinder is up to temperature.

Thanks that's really helpful. So essentially only use the bottom one? How do I tell if I am on economy 7? It is an electric only property. No gas.

In my previous place I had exactly the same. I actually left the bottom one on all the time, the top was a boost which was set to come on early morning. It was efficient enough that once the water hit temp, the insulation keep the heat so the immersion just switched off, not using much electricity. I remember the first time I used it panicking thinking I must have used a tonne of energy.

Nice, my last place had a combi so this is all new to me. Honestly didn't even know what Econ 7 was until just now.

I am not on Econ 7 right now I don't think but my tariff isn't too bad. Think I can just get away with having bottom immersion on at night then maybe manually switching it off in day? Should provide enough water was daily shower and a weekly bath.

If you are not on Eco7 then there is no advantage of doing it at night as your electric price is the same all day.

I couldn't say whats better between leaving it on all the time vs having it on a timer, I would imagine there is very little difference in it when you are not on Eco7.

If its not on a timer than just leave the bottom one on all day, you will eventually forget to switch it back on and be left with a cold shower. If you go on to Eco7 then a timer is a 100% must.

find your electric meter, if it displays 2 rates then you have a form of eco7 (others are known as eco10 and eco20:20 although these two are rare but there are others that are old historic tarifs that are still supported by suppliers).

Thanks, confirmed with the builders that no econ7 in place at the meters. So think I'll just leave bottom one on for now and should be fine. Sounds like it turns off the immersion automatically when it's filled and at optimal heat so guess it's not always on anyway.

If you have electric storage heaters then I would suggest talking to your supplier about changing to Eco7 and then running it all at night only along with the washing machine, dryer and anything else you can think of.

It's all underfloor heating. So not sure if it would work out.
