Hello chaps

Got a 2007 Mazda 6 2.0 petrol. For the last few months it seems to be burning oil at a horrendous rate of about 2l per 500miles.

Noticed it when the oil pressure light started to flicker on under heavy braking or tight turns, checked the oil and it wasnt even registering on the dipstick. Filled it up and the light went away.

Came back on about a month later and checked again, all the oil is gone. No sign of leaks and no soot around the exhausts. I do get some hints of smoke at high RPMS though.

Monitoring more closely it's burning through 2l of 5w30 in approx 500 miles which I've just been topping up as needed. Car drives completely fine and just passed its MOT last month.

I've a new car arriving on monday so I'm not worried about it dying on me, but it's whether the car is remotely sellable in its current condition or if I should ship it off to the scrapyard once I'm done. If It's probably only worth £850 but I don't want to sell someone a terminal patient, but if I can fix it cheaply I'll do it and try to sell it on. Otherwise I'll take the £250 from the scrapyard. Thoughts?

Has it been serviced recently and have you tried using a thicker grade oil?
2l in 500 miles sounds pretty terminal though, have you checked the coolant reservoir to see if its got any oil/mayo in it?

It was serviced about 7k ago, and no just stuck with 5w30 for the meantime. Could try thicker oil but like I say I'm not worried about keeping it, just if it's worth fixing. Nothing in the coolant but now that you mention it I topped it up last month and it's almost down to the low mark already.

Definitely no leaks, my driveway is pristine!

My car was using 1l every 1k miles. Turns out the crankshaft seal leaks when the engine is hot & pressure is up. No drips on drive either.

Aye I'm worried it's the seals which sounds expensive to fix, I'm all set for scrapping or breaking it if that's the case

We buy any car it. You may get more for it.

It's tempting! :D

Not necessarily. You can get at the front seal on mine with the wheel off if you take out the arch liner & the part is only £30.

It's the rear that is a clutch out job.
