will a 1060 6gb card be worth the upgrade ?

I have a 280x now and it will run every game i play maybe not max settings but they run. ideally i would have got a 1070 straight away but there just too expensive

i have also been looking at 980's but the age of them really puts me off seen as there going on 3+ years old

with a budget of £350 max what would be the better option

i have a not so great 1080p monitor but thats because of my gpu i would like to upgrade it to a 1440p one but there would be no point if i cant get a card that will run it

i have found a used 980 none ti for £210 used or im looking at paying more for a 6gb 1060

280x is similar to a 7950/7970 so a 970/980 is twice as fast.the 1060 sits between the 970 gtx and 980 gtx.so yes its about double the performance. 1060s are way over priced . id personally get a 2nd decent 970 gtx for about £100-120 if you can find one.decent branded one.same performance as a 1060 and a 3rd of the cost.

Ive just sadly bid adieu to my 970 which went to GPU heaven in a fiery blaze, so looking at my options I can either plug my old 7970 back in or order something new. Currently I'm sitting it out until I see what (if any) effect the new cards have. Buying a 1060 which is just marginally better than my 970 for more bucks is a bit of a kicker, so I am looking at waiting to see if any miners switch up and flog off their old cards or if some miracle happens to 1070 prices. I read somewhere that NVIDIA has absolutely no intention of lowering prices until Q3 so I'm not hopeful.

dont see why they would lower prices.they know miners will buy them regardless.mining isnt going anywhere.

I would not get a 1060 6gb for £350 to play at 1080p when you can walk in a store and get a 1060 3gb for £200 / £230.
Just my opinion.

I would ideally like to move to 1440p i was wondering if a 980 would pack enough to do that otherwise I.stuck with having to get a good 1080p card

i wouldnt buy anything coz you will be hard done by on the price. I would setup price alerts on a ton of places and wait it out. For example ive had some of my price alerts finally come good on 1080s i had setup ( all under or around £400 camel camel amazon but you need to be EXTREMELY quick as soon as you get the alert because the bargains go quick) Ok 3 months late as i already have my 1080 but id rather wait it out than pay over the odds.

Also you mention you want to move up to 1440p gaming. If thats with all the bells and whistles you are looking at 1070ti 1080 at least. Dont "upgrade" to a 1060 or 970 or even a 290. Wont be worth it and you will have just chucked £350 down the drain. If you upgrade now you will end up properly upgrading again within 8 months to get what you originally wanted.

A 980 can offer a decent 1440p experience, so long as you're not expecting to be maxing out the latest big games at 60fps. With an overclock and a sensible balance of settings, it'll perform decently. It's a better option than a 3GB 1060.

7950 is nigh on the same as a 280x 970/980 is twice as fast.regardless of if you believe it or not.2 7950 = 980 score. 970 gtx is the best bang for buck upgrade.

Well there's no need for "belief" when we have objective testing. An overclocked 7970/280X gets ~9500 graphics score in Fire Strike. An overclocked 970 gets ~13500. That's a general impression from looking at the Fire Strike thread on here (the highest 7970 score in there is actually 11487, but that's at 1400MHz). For some real world testing, 44fps vs 61fps in Rise of the Tomb Raider, 58fps vs 71fps in The Division, 59fps vs 81fps in Fallout 4 and 108fps vs 140fps in Overwatch. All results taken from Techspot, since that's the only site I can think of that's benched them head to head any time recently.

Clearly the 970 isn't twice as fast whatever way you slice it. More like 40% faster, which is still a nice upgrade. Obviously the 980 would be a little faster, but still not even close to twice as fast as the 280X. No need for hyperbole.

280x = 7970ghz, not a 7950. And the upgrade to a 980 is not twice as fast, it's 50% at most.

I went from a 7970ghz to a 290x (which is near to a 390, 480 etc which in turn are near to 980), the upgrade was absolutely NOT twice as fast.

P.S To the OP, get a second hand 290x for £130 if you can, don't buy a 980 for £210, that's too much for similar-ish performance to a 290x. If you want a bigger leap you need to find a second hand 980ti and clock it for £250 (gold dust now adays).

If I was you I would wait until nvidia releases their new cards.

Or keep an eye out for an offer on a 1070. I managed to get my self a 1080 for £430 new a couple of months back.

7950 / 7970 fetch about 100 pound at moment because of miners. a 970 gtx can be picked up for about 100-120.is a lot faster. its as fast or faster than a 290 heat machine uses less power and better overall card. people on here so picky.

how is saying buy a 970 gtx a bad thing ? its as fast as a 1060gtx within a couple of fps for a third of the price.a card thats nearly 50 percent faster uses less power / heat and costs 100-120 pounds. people are moaning lol.

sell the card you got put the money towards a 970 get a nice boost for next to nothing.or get a a amd 290 heater.we got the weather should keep you warm.

Both the 970’s and the 290’s both go for around £200 second hand at the moment, I have just sold one of my 290’s for £190.
The GPU market both new and used is crazy, now is a horrible time to buy a GPU.

Right now the 1060 3gb is probably the best ‘bang for buck’ card around, at that thing was a joke when it released, and was deemed a ‘pointless product’,
well by me it was anyway..

I’d go used 970/980 as said - so long as they are not silly money - and use the difference to get an extra 8Gb RAM - makes quite a difference on some titles. :)
