Man puts hand over my back gate, gets bitten by my dog....

There must be some sort of protection for the dogs here, are you sure your vet has not said that they have suffered mental and emotional distress from this incident and the fear of being attacked in their own home?

Not a sarcastic comment.
:D

I’m sure no harm done whatsoever!

Roo (my girl) is the feisty one and undoubtedly the one who would have seen off any perceived threat.

Marley on the other hand is huge, taller than me when he jumps up, yet literally scared of his own shadow! A big baby!

Neither is aggressive nor prone to biting etc, but, Roo most certainly likes to guard her pack (us) I’m quite sure she carried out this aspect of her personality perfectly today.

I’ll wait and see if there’s any come back but, I’m doubtful to say the least.

Still can’t quite believe said shyster was stupid enough to put his hand through, then again, the criminal element is rarely endowed with intelligence....

I’m hopeful nothing else will come if it and if it was to do so, I think I and my dogs position is justified, let’s hope eh?

we had left the front door open once and a courier instead of knocking stepped into our house and shouted hello

Cue a Staffy whom is protective of home / mrs and kids ( i was out) jumped at him and in the guys defense he fell down the step and my dog bit him around the belly button area not savage but enough. to show teeth marks, not punctured the skin but you knew as such.

I told the guy to call a ambulance or i called them i cant remember and then the police followed, the police wanted to see the dog, bought dog to meet police man and they were happy (not a banned breed etc)

The next day the guy text me after compensation, for a quiet life i settled with him and that was that. I do feel bad but he shouldn't have come in the house, indecently we shouldn't have had the door open but my mothering law left it open while she went to the park with my daughter.

This does concern me, my dogs are my beloved pets but I chose them for a reason - excellent guard dogs - if someone was daft enough to just walk in through my front door I do wonder what would happen (hence the warning sign on said front door) our house rule is the front door is locked at all times and nobody answers the door until the dogs are sent upstairs (which they are happy with and don’t respond to the door being opened by myself or another family member after they’ve been told to go up)
They are extremely intelligent animals and it’s remarkable how they understand the house rules!

If you have pet insurance it may have a public liability element to it. Your house insurance should have a public liability element to it also but whether it covers incidents with pets varies by policy. So either of those things may help if it turns ugly. (Not a lawyer, not legal advice.)

As for whether your dog gets in trouble for this, no idea!

Good doggos. Friend has a white shepherd just like them, awesome dogs.

I certainly don’t think he deserved it to a degree, on the other hand, he wasn’t particularly bright was he?

The dog(s) were already in the back garden barking prior to him attempting to open the gate - they saw him from the landing window arrive and come up the steps to my house (their usual vantage point) and bolted outside (I have a dog flap) I’m not afraid of dogs by any measure but I wouldn’t put my hand over a gate or fence with two barking German Shepherds (or any other large dog) behind it, beggars belief that he’d do so imo.

Think he was a shyster, on all previous occasions where a visit has been pre arranged the contractors have always kept well away from the gate until I’ve told them the dogs are shut away - I always warn contractors when they phone to arrange a visit of the presence of the dogs and that they have access to the back garden.

To me this seems like common sense no? I own a dog and she has never bit me nor anyone else, but I would never walk into someone else's garden if there was any signs of dogs that I've never met before (In fact, I would knock on the door just to be courteous!). If no one answered the door and I needed access to the back, I would simply leave a note with my contact details asking for access.

So you knew he was coming then?

Did you want him on this occasion?

Why not just keep the dogs shut away?

I tell you honestly, I can't recall ever entering someone's back garden without permission, ever. Esp not fenced and gated ones.

We did lose our ball in other people's gardens like kids do, and we chose someone to go and knock on the door to get it back, which was scary enough for us as children :p

Wut? Ye gads, my parents would have murdered me for doing that...

And fortunately in my adult life I have never seen any kids doing that either. I guess one of the joys of living in moderately nice area.

The difference between Scotland and Cornwall :p Near a friends house, fairly rough area the gardens were joined for maybe 6-7 lengths with low level fences. It was always a competition to see how many you'd get through without getting caught. :D

Oh yeah if our maw caught any of us sneaking into a garden for a ball, it was trouble. But c'mon you played knock(chap) door run?

Also I'm not saying the OP is right or wrong.

If you’d read my earlier comment you’d see I’ve made enquiries with the roofing contractors and apparently someone came out last week to check the job (my daughter confirms this)

So no, I didn’t know he was coming nor want him to on this occasion and the contractors have no record of someone due out yesterday.

The dogs are secure in my garden behind tall fences and said gate, I always shut them away if I know someone is coming.

They have a dog flap in my back door so they have access to my back garden whenever they like (I can lock the flap if I want to)

They are White German Shepherds, bred to be protective and not aggressive (which is why you won’t see a white Shepherd used as a police dog)

My gate is nearly 7ft high with a small gap you can put your hand through to open the latch on the other side (padlocked anyway)

The plot thickens though,I’ve made enquiries and we’ve already had someone out to inspect the repair last week and the roofing contractors have no record of anybody calling today, the guy left no details and quickly left....

I’m beginning to wonder if he wasn’t genuine and trying it on? Casing the place maybe?

Anyway I’ve spoken to a friend who’s a Police Officer and she can’t see it being an an issue, I have a secure back garden with ample warnings and she thinks any investigation would conclude I’d taken reasonable steps to warn of the dogs within.

She doubts I’ll hear any more about it and is of the view he was an opportunist who got well & truly caught out.

My daughter has taken dated photos......
What exactly did the man claim was his reason for being there? How would he know to make an excuse about looking at the roof? Could he be connected to someone at the roofing place who is using the job as a cover to pass on householders details (when they're home, access etc) to his mate to go & rob?

I honestly think you should be fine there then, but alas, I am not the law.

Yeah that's a fair point.

What a stupid, pathetic country this is.

The moment we stop punishing people for the utter stupidity of others, the better. Guy deserves to lose his hand.
Amen.

What if he was breaking in? Why should the victim (home owner) should be either be robbed or be the defendant on the court if the perpetrator was bitten by the dogs?

The guy clearly trying to gain unauthorized access to the house, and it was his fault.
