So it looks like n.korea are ready to give up its nuclear weapons and meet trump in person.

Trump has done in under a year what others have failed for years, possibly.

Could trump end up being one of the greats?

I was thinking this a couple of days back when it was announced.
I think it requires a few results before praise can be given.
Fingers crossed?

You mean South Korea have done it.

No without trump's robust manner it would not have happened, else why haven't s.korea achieved it before. People don't like trump, I get it but credit where it's due.

The fact is Obama ignored the problem and it grew because of that, just like cancer. NK thought that they can say and do whatever they want and nothing will be done. But here comes Trump, totally unpredictable and speaking the same language as they are and this scares NK into thinking "Crap, this madman might actually be crazy" and now wants to talk.

Whatever you think of Trump, it's an astonishing milestone.

I feel there's been a lot going on in the background and trump is just 'the face at the time'. It's all coming to head this year with Russia and the middle east, this seems to be one small part in that playbook.

[OT: One thing that did surprise me about trump was his comment to the NRA]

Nope.

Firstly, Trump can't take any credit for it; this had nothing to do with him. Huge respect for South Korea's president and national security director, who arranged the meeting. It takes a lot of guts and diplomacy to drag two maniacs to the negotiating table.

Secondly, NK has a history of making disarmament promises and subsequently backing away from them, so at this stage nothing has been achieved except an agreement to meet and talk.

Could trump end up being one of the greats?

He could if he finally achieves something significant. Won't be holding my breath for that.

Completely false.

''We could destroy you,' Obama warns 'erratic' North Korean leader.'

'Obama slaps new sanctions on North Korea.'

'President Trump Blames Obama for North Korea, But He's Following Obama's Strategy.'

Perhaps he took Trumps threats more realistically than those from Obama.

To say Trump had no influence on it is flat out wrong, even if SK can take much of the credit. America led this latest round of economic sanctions and very openly and publicly applied pressure on NK. They obviously now feel they are in a position that they are not able to maintain.

I give Trump credit for this. He's been in office for what....just over a year? He is/will/going to achieve quite a lot I think.
He's ripping up the rule book for sure.

Ignore the spin and talk and look at what's actually happening.

You can be committed to denuclearise and never actually do it.
You can meet Trump and not actually agree anything.

My cynical side says this is just a set up so they can trash talk Trump when North Korea proves themselves to be unreliable.

They've been hit pretty hard by the sanctions I guess. Those mean more than anything Trump has said or tweeted

I'm sure NK have agreed to this because they're trembling at Trump's infamous hard-deal making, and not at all because he's a weak, easily-manipulated narcissist that will be useful to them

This

Will only believe whatever NK say once they allow the nuclear inspector full access to the country.

and this:

NK have made promises and agreements in the past and then reneged on them as soon as the pressure was eased. The regime only has one objective and that is its own survival regardless of the cost to its own people and others around them.

It is fortuitous timing for Trump. This will be a huge media distraction from his latest fad of provoking trade wars with his allies.

Yeah this whole thing has me suspicious. Why would they do such a massive U turn? Stinks of them playing games tbh

There’s a trump thread in SC, not sure if this thread is warranted.

And uhh no, Obama threatened NK and placed sanctions as well. Mind you people conveniently forget that bit. But it’s all down to S Korea for making this happen. No credit is due to Trump at all, he wants to start a war with N Korea....that’s his end game. But if this results in N Korea behaving then great stuff but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Only a matter of time before Trump starts tweeting his insults when things don’t go his way ;).
