Going to be buying a used car from a dealer over the next day or so, most likely this one: www.wessexgarages.com/used-cars/8375251-kia-picanto-sr7

I'm not particularly interested in anyone's thoughts on the make, model or price - that might sound a little bit like having our heads in the sand but my partner needs a car ASAP for a new job and that's the model we've got our sights fixed on. We don't have time to look around, we already drive a Kia and we can afford it. I can go into more detail if someone really really wants to start a classic OcUK car-based argument ;).

I've not bought a used car for a LONG time, last was new, so just wondering how much haggle room there's likely to be in something like that from a dealer. We'll just be sticking it on a card and whether that's better or worse for them vs finance I'm not sure. I'm guessing worse.

Also anything else we - as total amateurs when it comes to cars - should check when buying/collecting, like tread on tyres etc?

Thanks in advance.

I've just gone through this - consensus is that most dealers price well now as it's so easy to compare nationally. I'd look at pushing for incentives from finance from them (free servicing, discount on base) but make sure the APR is ok, worst case - take the finance and then pay it off with card (make sure they accept credit card if this is the way you want to go).

Aside from that, service history, next service, MOT, bodywork, glass, tyre tread, brake wear, anything that might be expensive immediately.

Check it as you would a normal car from a private seller. Anything that could be called wear and tear needs extra attention.

I'd generally go in asking £500 off and then be happy when they offer at least £250.

I don't think you'd save much by doing finance to get the price lower and then paying it off but it doesn't hurt to ask. I think that incentive really only applies to new car; the margin dealers have on used in terms of finance commission is much lower.

Something I would want sorted - It has an odd tyre on it - 3 Hankooks and a Mohawk??
Check the KIA warranty is valid
Service history - only had a quick look and couldn't see it mentioned

If they wont give discount try for a free service or something

A mismatched tyre on a Kia wouldn't bother me in fairness but each to their own.

Normally a dealer such as Wessex wouldn't consider anything without service history but definitely worth checking as imagine it'd be necessary for warranty purposes if there's anything left on it.

Worth checking their reviews though. A quick Google doesn't look too brilliant.

It wouldn't particularly bother me (or indeed probably 99% of people who would typically buy a Picanto), however for £50 or whatever a matching tyre would cost it's something they could easily put right.

Definitely worth confirming as KIA have 7 year/100k mile warranty iirc

As always though you have to take some of it with a pinch of salt as happy buyers don't always post about their experience. Any issues though, and at least it is a manufacturer backed dealer, so you can always contact KIA UK if not happy with customer services etc.

Sure you don't need a 530d? :D

Thanks all. Didn't notice the Mohawk tyre so will ask what happened there. Apparently it was owned by a Kia mechanic for his wife so they should know. And yeah, it does have FSH and warranty etc; main reason for getting a Kia.

What’s going on with those wheels looks like they’ve been spray painted black with a rattle can from the pound shop. They are small enough anyway but being black they look like wheels off a skateboard they are so small :p Would look much better standard silver.
