Cooker hood light bulb - voltage question

I have a Caple cooker hood and the one of the downlights has blown. The manual advises the bult spec to be 20 halogen lamp 220-240V 20W.

I've removed the faulty bulb and it looks like this:

The problem I am facing in finding a replacement is that they are all 12V only, not 220-240V. (Robery Dyas, screwfix)

(I believe such bulbs are typically used in cars hence 12V).

I am not well versed in electrics - I presume a 12V version won't work and I need to find the right one?

(there is no print of the spec on the bulb I removed to check if it was a 220-240V one.

I suspect the manual is wrong or unclear - afaik G4 bulbs only come in 12v and they tend to make these things idiot proof so you cant put the wrong bulb in etc so a 240v version would seem unlikely

Closest 240v bulb to that would be a G9 - this has 2 loops rather than 2 pins

G9 won't work as the socket literally has two small holes to fit two pins (G4), so I am still looking.

WHat's the worst that could happen if I put a 12V G4 in there?

There are a few that claim to be 220/240v on eBay?

However, looking at a few sites it seems that the bulbs you require are 12v. To be honest I reckon they're 12v and the eBay listing is just wrong and I've stumbled across it.

Might be worth sending them an email to clarify?

Which sites do you mean? Sites about the cooker hood?

You can get G4 in 240w, i had them in some downlighters in cupboards when I moved into my house, they were blown of course
I took them out and resued the fittings with transformers to use 12v LEDs as finding 240v LED seemed impossible, but clearly they did exist somewhere, and I didnt want 20w bulbs for lighting a few glasses anyway!

EDIT, just to say I also replaced my cooker hood, whilst the manual said 220-240v the bulbs were 12v. The manual was referring to the input voltage, which of course in the UK is 220-240v

Worst case if you put a 12v in and they really are 240v they will blow instantly you turn them on.
I bet they probably are 12v as you say they often use generic bulbs for these sorts of area.

i would use LEDs once you work out what you need, they are slightly harder to source but they are available

A 12v bulb from Robert Dyas is working so far, though the fitting was a PITA to replace. Flat hasn't burned down. The manual in wrong.
