Is the GTX 970 a bad card compared to 10xx?

I have a 970 in my current rig and cant really justify replacing it based on the benches and reviews i've looked at against the 1060/1070. I'm aware the 10xx are better cards, but the performance/price gain seems miles off to me.

It's paired with my Ryzen 5 1600 @ 3.8Ghz and I cant fault it, however I know its the next component to be replaced.

Is now a good time to replace a 970? and if so, what with?

Cheers,

the 1060 gtx is about the same as a 980 gtx.so only slightly faster than a 970 gtx. a 1070 gtx is almost twice as fast as a 970 gtx so a big jump.1060 isnt worth the price keep what you have.

GTX 970 is a fantastic 1080p card. 150w for mostly maxed out 1080p gaming for under £200 is pretty decent.

If upgrading, I'd only get a 1070 which is roughly equal to 2x 970s in SLI (when properly scaled) but I wouldn't buy one for over £350 at this point.

No way would I change my 970 at the moment. I’m at 1080p and it still happily munches through everything I play.

My only issue is that the second monitor keeps going off for a second or two, but I don’t think that’s a card issue, probably more a cable one.

i did just this (970 to 1070) but I play at 4k and I got it when prices were at least a bit lower (£375),
ive since sold my 970 for ~£180 so the upgrade was 200 roughly,
most 970's with non-stock coolers pull 160-180 second hand so it depends if that upgrade is worth the 200 to you, at 1080 res it sounds like it might not be

970 is still a good card for 1080p, unless your upgrading your monitor to UW or 4k shortly keep that.

The 970 is still more than capable of running any game out there at 1080p.

I've been playing through Kingdom Come, expecting it to be a low frame rate slide show given what i'd heard about its performance but was amazed to find I could either run it at a solid 50-60fps on a mixture of high/ulta settings or a locked 30fps with everything maxed out.

...anything less than a move to a 1070 is a total waste of money and TBH Pascal architecture is now just old news, IMO unless your current card has failed and you're desperate for a replacement, moving to a Pascal card in 2018 is a silly thing to do.

Don't give Nvidia easy money, they're being incredibly lazy right now with new GPU's, at least make the buggers work for a living.

I had a 970. I was gaming at 1200p and for the most part it was good. Obviously I had to reduce the IQ in some games.

I would say if you have the money then an upgrade is warranted but definitely wait for the next Nvidia gen as we cant be that far away now. It would be a little silly to put money in to the 1000 series at this late stage in the game.

I’m running a 970 and a 2500k at 1080p. Still runs everything on a mix of high and ultra.

The prices for new tech can eff off as far as I’m concerned.

Not really considering we don't know when the next batch of cards will be out. Besides at 1080p if the OP gets a 1080 it will last him 3-5 years

i think the point is thought that for the £ per performance the 1080 is pants compared to a 970 or any of the older decent tech to be honest

Perfectly fine for 1080p.

I'd go a bit further than that and say 970 is perfectly fine for 1080p @ 60Hz, but anything more than 1080p or higher than 60Hz and settings need to take a drop. I'm dragging mine out for as long as I can but I really need an upgrade.

The whole rig I bought from OCUK with a 970GTX cost less than some of the 1080Ti's out there just now, madness.
