Focus 1.5 tdci 120 PS Titanium

What’s your reasoning for changing? Do you need more space? Or are you now commuting a far greater distance?

At the minute we have 2 cars.... the Fiesta and a 3 year lease Hyundai i30 which goes back in less than a year. I do not plan on having a second car again so the Fiesta or its replacement will be our only vehicle. With kids (adults, size-wise!) a Fiesta is just too small. My thinking is to get shot of it earlier to maximise what I can get for it and swap to a car which is more practically sized without being too large i.e. Mondeo! My driving is 11-12K/year and includes a 15 mile commute each way (not a huge distance to/from work).

I'm sure it'll be fine, more suited to older kids anyway as the boot on the hatch isn't really all that much bigger than the fiesta (which would be a pain for prams etc).

I had been thinking of getting a remap done on the Fiesta for better economy. I see this can be done to this Focus also for about £390. Thoughts? I would have course tell my insurer!

Don't waste your time, it will be plenty economical out the box. If you wanted more power you'd be better buying a more powerful model at purchase time. For economy I can't really see the point when you're starting with an already frugal car

The Focus is a fantastic car IMO, good to drive, handle well and economical.

My partner has recently changed her 2012 1.6tdci Zetec after owning it since it was 5months old, bar a broken spring nothing failed and it was ultra reliable.

She swapped it for a 2017 Kuga which she didn’t get along with and frankly drove worse than the old Focus despite being largely the same platform.

The Focus was a tough act to follow, she loved it and after handing the Kuga back we looked at lots of alternatives from the Mercedes A-Class to Vauxhall Astras, she’s settled on an AUC 65 plate 5 door BMW 118d Sport which finally to her mind betters the Focus and she’s delighted with it, the build quality especially is in a different league (as you’d expect)

It’s a bit smaller than the Focus but we’ve had no issues putting my Grandaughters pushchair / buggy in it.

I’d certainly recommend having a look at one.

Tbe 1.5 diesel engine is pretty gutsy and they drive well, build quality is poor though. We've had them as company cars for the last 2 years and they're nowhere near a similar costing golf with regards to build. I'm in the market for a similar car as mine is going back soon (due to a change in job), but my search won't be including a focus. Having said that they seem pretty popular around here and if you can put up with the plastic fantastic cabin I'm sure you'll be happy with one.

If by build quality you mean how well the interior stands up to time then I would agree, neither our fiesta or my ST are completely rattle or creak free. However I have never owned a Vag car that does not have either constant minor niggles or been downright unreliable.

Wouldn’t bother with the diesel then if you don’t do more than 12k per year. Especially given the hate campaign against them now with big city’s hoping to ban them or charge them etc I would go for the 1.0 ecoboost or if you want more power the 1.6 ecoboost that has 180bhp and returns nearly 40mpg. Petrol will hold its value better also. Have a look at the Zetec S model it’s far nicer looking with the body kit and bigger alloys.

My partners was rattle free after 5 years and 50k miles, the only issue was a creaking drivers door window which the local dealer couldn’t fix for more than a week before the creak returned.

In my case, I mean the quality of the interior trim is better in the 1 series, the 1 feels more “solid” , has a much firmer ride despite being the Sport trim - the M-Sport is firmer again, IMO a bit too firm for a family run around, the handling is spot on though, very much better than the Focus which itself was a fine handling car.

Just got one of these (a 16 plate) and it's great, my mileage went from around 6k to 35k+ so the petrol 3 series (although really good on juice for a petrol) was getting too many miles on it, it has enough power for the motorway etc. and it's a quiet and rattle free as the 3 series that we still have (a 15 plate) but much better on the mpg front.

As mentioned though it's really no point getting a diesel if you're only doing 12k a year, get the 1.0 petrol turbo as that is a really good car.

Granted the 1.0 ecoboost petrol engine is a cracker, but don't expect to get anywhere near the stated mpg unless you drive like Miss Daisy!

I'm unsure why you would want to remap it? Why not just get something that suits from the off? There's plenty of cars in your price range that will give you the benefits of decent mpg whilst also offering better performance. For example a mark 3 - 2.0 TDi Skoda Octavia will give you better performance, much more room, arguably a better interior (especially in elegance spec) and similar mpg.
