I've now a 1080ti/5960x for 2nd PC, interesting Freesync findings though

So guys. I've had my 2nd PC up and running now for around 3 weeks as I've now got a 1080ti in my possession, which I've got paired with a 5960x, Asus Rampage V Extreme and 16gb Ddr4 ram.

I was curious to see how the 1080ti felt compared to my Vega64 in my main gaming rig, whilst using the Freesync monitor (obviously not using the adaptive tech). What I found interesting though is just how damn good freesync/adaptive sync tech really is, ive gotten so used to that buttery smooth gameplay. Running the 1080ti via DP to my monitor and capping frames to 144fps with vsync, even gaming at such a high frame rate felt lumpy compared to when using Vega64 and Freesync with no vsync. I was not expecting such a difference, I thought running 144fps would hardly feel different at all, how wrong I was. Only one thing for it, I'll need to go and get a gsync screen now, there's no way I can game without adaptive sync tech now.

1080ti is lovely though :)

AMD had a great momentum with freesync (especialy the price they are at) and driver UI updates, ist's just too bad they didn't release a GPU to take advantage of that momentum, and the one they released (vega) are nowhere to be found, or at 200$ mark up over msrp.
sad really

Vega isn't bad per-se (esp when combined with a good Freesync monitor), it's just competing at the high-end and not the ultra high-end. I'd have zero problem in going AMD + Nice Freesync monitor if I was so inclined :)

Yeah my experience also with moving from FuryX to 1080& 1080Ti while having Freesync monitor.
And because the NV drivers do not have a maximum cap on FPS, we do have to suffer the vsync input lag if we do not want to have tearing etc. (which is still obvious when screen is jiggering even at 144fps)

Personally I am for new monitor, and knowing that my next gen GPU will be AMD either way, considering to sell the 1080Ti and buy a Vega 64.
Replace the monitor and then move on from there.

However from the other side the 1080Ti is good GPU for 2560x1440 to last for years to come. :/

Yo do know that there is a lot of 3rd party software that can limit FPS.? Besides capping frame rate below monitors refresh rate will end up with stutter when using vsync.

I do know those 3rd party tools but they do not work with many games, especially all those made with Clausewitz engine and World of Tanks/Warships.
So basically 99.99% of the games I play.

You can use nvinspector to expose a driver level framerate cap though results may vary - there is also a hack you can use to get the GPU Boost screen in the NV CP but not sure if it works right now and you do that at your own risk.

just a shame monitors are **** for my main priority i.e. IQ.

Tbf this LG I have is pretty damn good dude!! And as you know I've run an OLED on my desktop! It's a good blend of IQ/Gaming imo, and a decent size when it's only 18/20inches from my face (I couldn't do that with the TV lol).

Vega's been one continuous train wreck, When Polaris first launched along with the Pascal offerings we had Raj Koduri acting all disgusted by what was being charged for a 1080, fast forward to Vega's release and he's trying to use the price difference between a Freesync & G-sync monitor to justify Vega costing up to a 3 figure sum more than the 1080 had and did cost.

I tried three Vega cards, an AIO I returned, a V64 Limited Edition I sold on and a Sapphire V64 Nitro LE I also sold on. He almost single-handedly did what Nvidia's been trying to do for years. I'm now toying with the idea of sticking my 3440x1440 freesync monitor on the MM but it's such a nice monitor I wish Nvidia would adopt adaptive sync.

Nah LCD just isn't for me anymore, not seen that Lg monitor of yours but I've seen the best LCD TVs there are (with and without FALD) and they still just pale so badly in comparison to an OLED imo and the difference becomes even more apparent with any dark content.
