Hey all, I am in the process of building a new build (see Log Forums) and I am at a crossroads on what to do with the GPU.
Currently, I have two EVGA 1080tis FTW3 Hybrids in SLI formation that will be custom waterloop cooled shortly (already have the blocks and backplates). The goal of my build is a overkill 4k gaming rig. I currently have a 27in 1440p 144hz monitor but will be getting a 4k monitor as soon as the +100hz models are released (hoping any day now).
I am torn between a few options for the best gaming rig that will cover me through the release of the 1180ti and up to the 1280ti (Assuming thats the next gen)
1) continue with the current plan as I have all the parts already, knowing that the SLI right now can play pretty much anything in the 100hz range i wan. Then in 2.5 years when the 1280ti drops, sell my two cards for about $400 in total and get the new 1280ti. If history holds true, the two 1080tis will perform in line with the 1180ti.
2)Sell one of my 1080tis now and run my 4k games at lower settings to stay north of 100fps (make $850 between the card and returning the blocks). Then in a year when the next gen 1180ti is out and water blocks are available, probably sell my other 1080ti then for $400 but I am guessing pay at least $1,100 to $1,200 all in for the 1180ti card, waterblock and backplate. It could be even more if the demand is crazy for a while. Then again flip the 1180ti to the 1280ti when the next gen hits.
3) Do number one for the next year, then see how well the 1180ti performs. If its a monster compared to the 1080ti sli make the switch after the crazy dies down and if not, hold out until the 1280ti.
Things to consider, resale amounts are estimates, assumes that sli in the 1080ti will hold up for games I play (works for the two games i play now without any issue), and my estimate is that option 2 will cost me about $200 more in total than option 1 and option 3 will cost about $500 more in total than option 1.
Advice?
Thanks
Ps, ugh, i cant edit the title to fix upgrade.
