so i bought a 1080p 240hz monitor (which by the way is smooth asf) and i have an i7 6700k, however ive been running into a lot of issues with this processor so ive decided to get rid of that and the asus z170 sabertooth for a new mobo and new cpu. i have ordered a 1070 which comes tomorrow. My question is, what cpu should i get (and mobo) to get about 100fps+ in games like witcher 3, assassins creed origins, middle earth shadow of war. my budget ranges from 300-600 (mobo+cpu) but i dont want to pay an extra £100 for 5fps or something, any suggestions? thank you

Hello mate,if you want something that's a bit beefier, I'd go with something like...

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £740.47 (includes shipping: £10.50)

I know it's a fair bit over your budget but if you've got compatible ram you can shave off £199.99 (currently on sale) which would bring you around the top end still but I'd say was worth it. The only other thing you may need to consider is your cooler, whether it would fit or not. But I think this would give you quite a bit of a beast, especially if you overclock.

Depending on what ram you have it may be a good fit and depending on your cooler and if its compatible, you may need to fork out extra for replacements, I'd overclock it.

i have a noctua cooler on my 6700 atm, is it possible to remove this and use it on the new cpu and how?
and i have some corsair ddr4 16gb, will that work or is there something special that needs comptability or something? thanks

also im confused why the 8700k is only 3.7ghz when the old 6700k is at 4ghz?

Sorry pal, have edited my original post to include RAM just in case.

Your Noctua cooler should be compatible with the above as it uses the same socket type, not sure which cooler you have though.

The main difference between the 8700k and 6700k is cores! With the 8700k you'd be getting 6 cores and 12 threads as opposed to 4 cores and 8 threads.

As I understand it, the more cores and threads the more work your cpu can do and the more efficiently it can do that work. As far as the stock clock speeds go, that can be bumped up quite a bit on either.

Although if you are wanting to overclock the 8700k I'd personally look at getting a pre binned chip done by ocuk, as the 8700k runs pretty hot from the manufacturer and ocuk delid the chips, apply a much better thermal compound and guaruntee the chip you buy will hit a pre determined speed, such as 4.9 or 5ghz. But then those chips are quite a bit more expensive as all the hard work has been done for you.

Still if you don't need ram or a cooler...

Free copy of Far Cry 5 .
Eisbaer 360 one of the best AIO/CLC units to cool a non DeLid 8700k at 5ghz and over !

When in Populated areas AC:O really hits the cores hard and likes high thread count

can i use that cooler on a fractal design r5?
and (this is to both people) is it hard for me to delid the cpu myself?

thank you, its not cheap but i guess its a pretty good cpu with that motherboard, i will definately look into it. would a noctua NH D9L be sufficient? i dont wanna get a really overclocked chip that my cooler cant handle, thanks

from their website

Water cooling compatibility
  • Front – 360, 280, 240, 140 and 120 mm radiators of all thicknesses (requires removal of drive bays)
  • Top – 420, 360, 280, 240, 140 and 120 mm radiators. (A thickness limitation of 55mm for both radiator + fan applies on 420, 280 and 140 mm radiators) (420 and 360 mm radiators require removal of the ODD bay)

razor blade and it can be done, for £35 delid tool - then applying liquid metal - easily enough but if it goes wrong- ouch

Yeah I agree with orbitalwalsh, if you can afford it and will overclock I'd definitely get a pre binned.

what do you mean by from their website i dont understand?
would the noctua cooler work?

ah i see, if i remove drive bay i cant use my hard drives, if i put them at the top i will have to remove noise dampening plate so it will be very loud. is it a big deal if i cant use an air cooler or do i definately need a water cooler with a delidded cpu?

with de-lid- should be good! to be honest its not a coolers fault- its intels ! poor TIM being used

You can try the Noctua D9L first and see how it copes. If you want a beefier air cooler then the Noctua D15S, BeQuiet Dark Rock 3/Pro 3 or Cryorig R1 etc will all fit in the Fractal R5.

As for delidding you can buy a delid tool and do it yourself for less. The one below says it is compatible with CoffeeLake but you can check with the store first to make sure. Just add some of the liquid metal and thermal paste from Thermal Grizzly.

Total: £30.47 (includes shipping: £3.48)

^^^ great tool, sold mine on to MM here. Hopefully still loating around
is it hard? will a warranty cover it? is it very common to do it wrong and it fails?

also i dont understand why intel dont just make them like that if they are so much better?

Not something I have ever done myself but from watching someone on youtube use one it looks pretty simple. The video below shows der8auer delidding an i5 with a Delid die Mate to give you an idea.
