You expect 40% - 80% of the worlds population to be killed off in 35 years? Wow. :p

Hang on. World peace? What World is this exactly?

in the grand scheme of human history the current level of "warfare" is pretty low

remember before ww2? just after everyone had recovered from ww1? and that was just after the boer war the franco prussian war the russo japanese war the american civil war the napoleonic wars...

and that's just the few big names i can remember off the top of my head and we've barely hit 1700

Not really. If it comes down to it and article 5 is enacted causing all of NATO to get involved then any Russian aggression would be easily kerb-stomped by the combined might of NATO conventional forces. If nuclear weapons are deployed and are used then it would be more than likely Russia using their tactical nukes. If they ever do that though, well yeah....

Current military theory suggests that Russia in a full scale war would steamroll the whole of EU in the first few days, well before any help from US could ever arrive.

In the end, the Russian military is just bigger and has more of everything and as seen in Syria and their own home conflicts, they will use blunt force to smash and bomb anything.

Anyway, I personally don't think WW3 will kick off, if US or Russia do trade shots, it be tic tac toe, Russia sinks a ship, US shoots a few aircraft down and so on, I don't think it will convert into a full scale war between the two.

That said... there is current rumours on twitter that the Russian Air force is buzzing the USS Donald Cook (The same ship that got buzzed before, two times in fact with rumours that it had it's systems disabled), these rumours is from Turkey's version of CNN (very fake news), still waiting for that to be confirmed yet.

I should add, they was flying around Syria air space like crazy last night, 2 Migs headed out to sea towards where some US Navy ships was sailing, but turned around after a few minutes.

If it does go to nukes i am going to sit out on my balcony and watch it with a beer... bit of a pain in am no longer near a primary target what with the nearby nuclear plant closed and demolish recently as the UK really didnt need any more plutonium from it..i mean power from it... yes power.. not plutonium... no electricity... of course.. cough..
That means when it kicks off i will be one of the unlucky ones to survive prob, and get radiation sickness or have to eat rocks or something instead of going out with a big bang.

I think Trump was right regarding Nato not having proper contributions from many countries.
Really only the French and British who could put two fingers up to Russia when fighting in Europe like that, the rest would be steamrollered.

I think we can all agree that our military is vastly underfunded. We can give anyone a bloody nose for sure, but we honestly screwed in the long run.

The Falkland War is a good example on when your enemy has modern day weapons. We lost so many ships to the Exocet missiles and that was almost 30 years ago now.

is nuclear war really a possible outcome ? :/ I mean. Is anybody actually dumb enough to start the ball rolling.

What Russia actually said is that they will respond in force to an attack on their personnel in the region also as notice pre-emptively in defence to a direct threat or retaliation in the event.

I think there is a chance it might escalate to a hotter conflict in that region and a global increased militarisation and cutting off of trade, travel and diplomacy, etc. though - I'm really not sure at the moment which way Trump will swing in response it is so unpredictable.

I have no doubt that an all out Russian offensive, assuming either no nuclear or limited tactical battlefield use, would push significantly into Europe - initially scoring significant victories against the under-prepared forces against them who'd be reliant on their tech advantage to buy time for a response - but in the long run their supply lines would become far too extended and they'd start to engage sovereign armies more directly at which point the tide would most likely start to turn against them - they wouldn't get even close to steam rolling the whole of Europe without massive use of nuclear weapons even as under-funded and underprepared as many nation's armed forces are these days. Also there is a bit of a thorn in their side in that respect in that pushing that many forces into Europe leaves them vulnerable to a pre-prepared flanking attack with the US able to rapidly activate assets out of Norway, etc. which they'd have to decide between dealing with first - giving Europe more time to prepare or trying to deal with later.

One area Russia despite gaining massive advances due to experience in Syria still has problems with is rapid long range forward supply and assault - one of the few areas they do respect our armed forces for and a shame we've year on year reduced resources for those abilities despite the lessons around Falklands, etc.

Regarding the Donald Cook, etc. there is a difference between those ewar systems in a buzzing incident like that and a proper hot engagement - those Russian ewar system are very effective - at very short range - in a combat situation they wouldn't get a plane remotely close enough to use it before being shot down unless they used a saturation attack - at which point the use of ewar would be a moot point heh.

It was very possible, if not for Stanislav Petrov we may not be here

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-41314948

Today however I'm not so sure anybody wants to go down as the human who ended the human race, but we live in crazy times so anything is possible.

All it takes is an order from way up high and those ICBM's get set loose

I think however when WW3 comes (and it will, in the last 3400 years 92% of that time we have been at war with one another) it will be a largely conventional war with nukes used as a last resort

We lost 2 ships to exocet and 1 of them was a freighter.

Falklands as much as anything demonstrated the difference in terms of training and experience (and probably moral) and a bit of luck can make in any war - even with different force sizes and tech.

I remember that!

So not available on DVD then? Would love to watch it again, although probably rose tinted glasses etc

Managed to find a copy a couple o years back.

It sucked on a rewatch lol. At the time I think it was deemed "groundbreaking" or something, but compared to todays high quality shows it really was quite poor.
