Wearing a stab proof vest and carrying self defense for work

Okay so for work, I'm out in city centres unlocking and getting into banks at 2-9pm or even mid night. I pick up stuff (not money) then I'm back out, alarm and lock up and then into my Merc Vito and off I go probably smashing close to 106 MPH.

The question is, it can feel quite dangerous at times, like scallywags wags watching you with their hands down thier keks. We've had a few stabbings and killings here too in the UK. It doesn't take much for a drunk or someone to think it's money I may have and come at me or take my Vito.

We work on our own unlike G4S and have no protection or weapons.

My question is, could I wear a stàb proof vest under my uniform and carry something for self defense like a heavy touch/baton (even if it stays in the van) or pepper spsray?

Any advice would be awesome.

You cannot carry a weapon, full stop.

If you don't feel safe doing the job then don't do it. I assume you get paid well for the work you are doing in comparison to the skill required to do it.

You can wear whatever you like under your uniform. The person who presents one of the historical Youtube channels I watch routinely wears a mail shirt under his everyday clothing, for example. If it's properly made and properly fitted, it doesn't show at all and doesn't restrict your movement. It weighs a fair bit (which is mainly why he does it) and it'll stop any bladed weapon. Modern armour would give wider protection because it's more solid. A spike (in modern times, probably a screwdriver) would probably get through mail and probably not get through modern armour designed to stop piercing as well as cutting.

You're not allowed to carry a weapon in the UK. You are allowed to carry a non-weapon item that could be used as an improvised weapon if needed. Since you work at night, for example, you might want to have a torch handy. A really heavy duty torch. One that won't break if dropped or if it rolls around in the back of your van. One with lots of heavy duty batteries in it, so you can rely on it for bright light for quite a while. It would be quite long, quite thick, quite heavy and very robustly built. Like a club...but it's not a weapon at all. It's a tool that you have a perfectly good reason to carry when you're working. If someone tries to stab you, is rather surprised when the stabbing has no effect and you take that opportunity to hit them with your torch to stop them trying again, no problems there. You're not carrying a weapon and you used very reasonable force (assuming you don't carry on hitting them after they're down).

A big mag light, helps you to see in the dark and might deter the scallywag wags.

G4S don't carry weapons, even their Prison Custody staff are not allowed batons.

I've already got a flashlight baton but it looks like a baton with a tourch. I would only have it in the van to be honest. My aim is for protection but without being illegal.
