What would a third world war really look like?

Well, it would appear Russia said as much, which probably means that's too high, but the "allies" as it were could either be truthful or not want the actual capabilities of the enemy system to be revealed...

Well i guess it's inconclusive then.

Hard to find any good information - obviously they might have used planes for interdiction and in individual cases had luck with shorter range AA but from what I can see based on supposed number of launchers, reload time and probability of a kill on this kind of target the S-200 would only account for around 24 missiles interdicted at most.

Why are people so annoyingly biased? (I know Brexit has released some of that pent up patriotic ****, but please... dont)

Projection much? Where’s the bias? I just see questioning of Russian claims. What has brexit got to do with it?

The older S-200 systems the Syrians use shot down 70% of the missiles, so why would you say that the S-400 would be categorically worse?... the S-200 is the one we have all the details on and we still lose most of our strikes...

Where has anyone said anything about the new systems being worse?

For the record, no i'm not "Shilling", this is a very serious failure of the cruise missile technology if a **** system we have everything on is able to destroy most of our mission, you shouldn't be ecstatic and foolish trying to paint Russian systems as trash.

I don’t see anyone saying they are trash. It seems unlikely that “most” of our mission was shot down.

These AA systems are not the be all end all anyway in a serious conflict. They can be saturated. How many launchers will be in a given area? How many missiles are available?

Valuable information would have been gained by both sides. No doubt Russia would have deployed a few of their newer defenses to test them out. They now know how effective they are. The US knows how effective it's own missiles are. Also crucially they will know where the most heavily defended areas are, indicating higher value assets.

Those older S-200 launchers are single rail and take a little time to be "reloaded" and prepared for additional firing - they have fairly decent range though with ability to hit something like a cruise missile at around 60-80 miles IIRC - against a medium bomber aircraft they have around 60-70% kill probability but a little lower against cruise missiles.

I think most radar systems have what they call a 'war mode' which is basically only to be used when things really hit the fan, effectively providing a bunch of frequencies that won't have been seen before - I would imagine it's going to take a serious strike against Russian assets for them to turn on those S400 systems and effectively reveal there true capabilities.

Russia cant afford anything its quite simple.

The country back home is in tatters, cant we just off their internet access or something or make it dial up speeds to it gets really really annoying.

Isolate them more economically would be a start, give all the Russian bought property to the homeless.

Turn off their internets? You monster!!!

Yeah, for a defensive situation but not sure how they would bring it forward if they want to go on the offensive.

That's just one unit. Now multiple these hundred of times which are all connected to each other by data links and radar.

They all mobile too, so can travel 100's of miles per day and be setup quickly.

It should be noted, that IADS (Integrated Air Defence System is like the Air-Air version of MAD (Mutual assured destruction). It's there to deter attacks and give anyone a really bloody nose.

Our air defence is similar too theirs as well, to give an comparison but much shorter.

Does that mean we have two out?

Our what? we don't even have a comparable system, other than what is on the Type 45s, until 2019 probably more like 2020. EDIT: Yup Sky Sabre pushed back to 2020.

where is that image from? or is it your own?

It was taken about 2 hours ago by a friend who is on holiday up that way.

Russian spy, quick get him!

LOL......ironically, I studied Russian at school and I'm still fluent in it. In my Army days with the Royal Signals I was an EWOP - Electronic Warfare Operator. My job was to sit and listen to Soviet radio traffic.

I was talking in regard to the whole of NATO, so things like the Patriot while we do have the Rapier system still, it's absolutely pants.
