20k Spec Me

I don't see the point in spending this much unless there is something you particularly want. Which there isn't, or we wouldn't have such a broad list.
Have to agree here, if there’s something you particularly want for ballpark £20k then knock yourself out, otherwise don’t be so silly and decide what you want before peeing £k’s up the wall on something suggested that doesn’t actually fit your desire nor requirements.

"Sub 7s 0-60
40MPG on a run / 30 round town"

If you buy a performance car then sit at 60mph on a motoway to achieve 40MPG - you have to question, why have you bought it??
I have a Golf R and accept that on a run (not sitting at 60) I'll hit 30s town 20-25...but i bought the car for that, you cannot buy a performance car and then worry about MPG for me, could just be me and a pet hate though...
Before that a JCW Cooper S brilliant car to hit the figures (1.6 engine) but was so so bad reliability wise wouldn't go near another.

You're 21 don't get the Skoda, GTI / M135i / Golf R / S4 / Leon.

All depends how much you're truly bothered by the MPG as the R / 135 and S4 will be lower.

Nothing wrong with wanting a bit of performance, but something that can return decent MPG.

I'm going to be 21 in few weeks, I would choose the M135i or Golf R if I was spending that much on a car. Surely, if you tune it, you'll get better mpg and performance? The only deciding factor will be your right foot on what the mpg will be. :p

Can tune it but then informing insurance and probably get shafted even more for the mods

I got 99mpg down a hill in my M135i, too! :D

Why does changing the units to UK on that site drastically change the outcome? With us the average is 25, but with uk it's mostly over 30....

OP I'm looking at the exact same type of cars and have nearly the same requirements except I require a boot that is usable for when you go to B&Q, manual and I don't really care that much about kerb appeal. I currently have a 3 car list of 308gti, leon cupra and octavia VRS. Driven a DSG cupra which i was impressed with (aside from the DSG box, not so impressed there). Got the octy booked for tomorrow but trying to track down a 308gti to drive that is anywhere near me is proving difficult. Might be worth considering the 308 Gti if you can find one?

I averaged 44mpg on a return trip to London from Manchester. It certainly is achievable, but it's very very boring :)
I also averaged 44.2mpg in my M135i on a return trip MK>Leeds. I just sat on cruise and didn't exceed the speed limit. It's very achievable in an M135i, and I routinely got over 37mpg door to door from mine. My all-time average over ~70,000 miles, including track days, Germany (three times, inc. Nurburgring), was 34.3mpg. In the M3, with the same driving style, I'm averaging 29.1mpg at the moment, over about 6-7k miles so far.

I nearly hit 40mpg in my Golf R Stage 2 but that was mainly motorway cruising and driving it in ECO mode with no loud pedal action.

The moment I floored it your looking at sub 20mpg if you drive it hard, but yes if your doing a lot of long trips and drive sensible a MK7 Golf R will tend to do around 35mpg stock or tuned. A MK7.5 is better due to 7th gear, they can exceed 40mpg on a run, but at the same time they are a lot more expensive than 20k.

You've not stated an age on the car or what annual mileage may be.

I have a mk5 Gti DSG that meets all your specs and cost me £5k. 250 miles a tank, £50 to fill up with premium fuel. Round down I'll get 24-28mpg, as low as 18 when driving it hard and happy sits around 40mpg on the motorway with cruise on. Mine's modified too.

A mk6 Gti will meet all your requirements under budget and give better fuel economy. A mk7 would be achievable too and again, better specs.

However, my friend's just bought herself a 1-year-old VW polo Gti. Looks smart, 194BHP, not sure on the total cost but I'd have one and it would definitely meet your requirements.

I would recommend you save a big amount of cash and get something older until you really know what you want. Or buy yourself a diesel for the long trips and run 2 cars.
