Is this a legal overtake?

Looking for a bit of advice on this, mainly just to gain clarification.

I was behind someone who overtook on a cross hatch section of a road near some junctions. Now he overtook a learner going say 40mph, there was plenty of room, and during this time of year they cut the hedges so you can see if anyone is approaching the junction(s) on both sides.

Looking on a piston heads thread here, providing the junction is clear, there is no oncoming traffic and it is safe, you can overtake. Would that be correct?

This is the road in question:

Needless to say I also overtook, made sure it was safe, no cars other than the one being overtaken, shoulder check etc... given the fact the person who was overtaken was a learner I'm worried that they might report me based on the overtake. I would say that the speed was no more than 65mph to get past quickly.

I feel bad overtaking them now, but am worried about being reported etc...

I am aware than if anything had happened, it would be at fault.

Any advice would be appreciated.

No solid white lines, so all good from what I can see?

I wouldn't feel bad. I doubt you will get reported, even if you did, nothing would ever come of it.

I’m on a phone so can’t mutiquote for some reason?
Anyway, thank you for the clarification that is is legal, after looking I thought it was the case but wanted to double check. :)

My main worry was being reported, but given the overtake was legal I’m less worried about that. What if for example the driving instructor was mad and has dash cam footage?

Maybe I’m overthinking it all!

If its legal (which it is), its legal. Even if the instructor got irate, foamed and the mouth and submitted the dashcam footage, you aren't going to get prosecuted for a legal maneuvre.

Which illegality would he be reporting you for? He might have been frothing at the mouth, but I expect driving instructors witness a whole lot of motorists doing things that drive them nuts (especially because most of those manoeuvres will have been prompted because of the learner in the first place), and that your overtake is on the very mild end of the spectrum.

You didn't break any motoring laws, although overtaking right where there were junctions might not have been ideal, so don't worry about possible complications that won't happen.

Shouldn't overtake at junctions at all really. My Mum was almost killed back in the 90s while overtaking on a junction. Someone didn't check both ways and pulled out right in front as she was in the other lane.

Its not just people pulling out of the junction you need to be aware of, the car you are overtaking may be slowing because they are about to turn right (obviously not in this case, but just because you can see the junction is clear, doesn't mean its necessarily safe)

Sadly it isn't always obvious there are junctions either - saw a motorcyclist killed awhile back because a large vehicle slowed to let someone turn out (and go right) as the motorcyclist was overtaking the large vehicle - neither the car turning out or the motorcyclist had a chance.

Well if you ask if it was 'legal' then no, it wasn't, as you exceeded the speed limit. Whether or not it was safe is something that only those involved can judge at the time.

You can legally overtake along as the line isn’t solid.

They are there to highlight the fact that it is potentially dangerous and you should only proceed with care. I suspect the reason for their placement is the junctions.

Not a greet idea overtaking anywhere near a junction but there are often places where overtakes in these road markings is completely safe.
