Who's ditching 1080 for 2080? (11 series ) ?

Hmm, I've very recently tried this and have to disagree.
IMO 1440p Ultra looks better than 4K lowered settings.

EDIT: Actually I am going to partially take that back. I think it depends on the game. Some do look better in 4K at lowered settings.
How much did you lower your settings? To medium or low? Because that is what I would have to in order for 4K to look worse than Ultra 1440p in my experience.

These days most games there is very little difference in IQ between Ultra and High, but a huge impact in fps. Coupled with not needing as much AA the grunt needed for 1440P Ultra to 4K High is not that huge. But there is a very visible difference in IQ. Going forward the gap in IQ from 1440p and 4K will only widen as more games target 4K also.

How can you sit 12 inches from a 40 inch display?? You can't see everything. You must be constantly moving your head around.
Thats the thing, i do move my head around a little but for games like Project Cars 2 and Elite this is great, it just adds to the experience and immersion. I also play a lot of Total War games and seeing your battles as well as the world map in that much detail and that close up looks awesome! a lot of the newer games come with UI scaling as well so this always helps.

I guess the best way i can explain the experience is to ask myself, could i go back to a 27 inch display? The answer to that is no, the detail that i see now compared to what i saw before is crazy. Even at 4k and 40 inches from that far away i dont need AA so having that switched off helps maximise FPS counts.

Far Cry 5 at LOWEST at 4K I was getting minimums of 40FPS on my 1080. And the game looked sharp yes, but like garbage. At 1440p I can play at Ultra everything at around 90 FPS. Don't get me wrong, I love 4K it can look amazing. And I really look forward to it, but its some way off. in 2 or 3 years GPU's might be ready for Todays games Ultra/60. But by then we will have new, more demanding games and indeed probably 4k 144hz monitors.

What games at 4k look the most impressive?

I really can't see what all the fuss is about, at least from what I've tried so far, the best ones I have seen so far in 4k are probably the witcher 3 and rise of the tomb raider + middle earth, everything else has been meh (when sitting at the appropiate distance from a 55" display)

EDIT:

Regarding the above, that is where I've found 4k shines the most, games with a lot of text/HUD based elements, as this is where sharpness/clarity really matters/shows.

I think most you guys are talking about 4K on a huge TV. My experience comes from a 27” monitor where the PPI is much higher. Also these things can be a bit subjective. I can only speak of what I personally see and for me there is a big enough difference in most games I have played since 2014 when I started 4K gaming.

I cannot comment about Far Cry 5 as I have not played it and probably won’t for some time until the new nvidia cards come out. I am surprised it is so power hungry though as I was getting 45-55fps on Witcher 3 with most things on highest settings on a GTX 1080 before I sold it.

Only have to look at God of war 4 to see what PC gaming is missing out in terms of visuals. **** it I'm buying a PS4 pro, I'm done with rip off PC gaming, £1000 GPUs lol.
This is what I have done this month. I sold my 1080ti to help fund a ps4 pro and 4k hdr tv purchase while the resale prices are good. I didn't want to lose too much surprisingly as I don't know what's going to happen. Still have an evga gtx 1070 ftw and so I'm going to let next gen cards pass me by this time.

It really depends on setup. I have gone from 70 inch 1080p to 65 inch 4k and the difference is huge but if on a (relatively) small monitor it won't be as obvious. Mind you I am not a resolution snob. My rift is crazy low resolution probably closer to 800x600*** but it is still where I do 80% of my gaming

*** I know this is not the Res of the rift

Not worth the coin from a 1080 card this year, just a willy waver gonks who will buy for a handfull of decent games, it's a mug year for GPU buyers, but go ahead cut your own throat.

that really is a very ignorant comment...... it may not be worth it for you (and probably isnt for me either) but "value" is a very personal thing. For some buying ANY gameing pc is a mugs game when you can buy an xbox 1 for a couple of hundred which which runs the majority of the same games.

others however have a vive pro installed or pimax 8k on preorder and that needs a monster machine.

No need to be rude at people who have different priorities than you. i know people who pay 1000s on golf club membership and clubs... to me that is crazy when you can go to the local municipal course for a few quid, after all its all knocking balls in holes.... but to each their own.

hah! someone hasn't seen superwide. don't worry, your slightly higher pixel density is good too ;)
I have. But much higher pixel density and not having to deal with borders in some games trumps it for me still. I can see my next monitor in a 2-3 years being 16:9 also to be honest. Just a personal preference thing really. There is no right or wrong. This is more superior experience for me and superwide much lower resolution and lower pixel density is for you :p;)

yeah that is the one downside, however since i got it, there hasn't been a single game i couldn't find a mod for (if no native support) to enable fullscreen. but hey, superwide and fluid fps with extra fov and immersion is for me, low hz narrowness with slightly smaller dots is for you! :)

Haha you made me chuckle there :D

I think the main reason I do not appreciate higher hz compared to others is I do not play FPS games competitively or much at all really. Just play single-player games with campaigns, a recent example being Far Cry 5 (not played yet, waiting for new nvidia cards) which I play at a slow pace where I explore and immerse myself in lovely lush sharp top of the range graphics ;)

haha, fair enough, i wont go back to 16:9, but a 4k equivalent 21:9 @ 100+ hz + gsync would be awesome, and expensive, not to mention the gpu needed :O

Like I say absolutely no point in paying for a GPU this year if you have a 1080 card, it's just money down the drain.

Yeah. Can't argue with you there. That sounds like 2-3 years away.

For me it would monitor that has OLED with proper HDR. 120Hz would be a nice bonus, but not a requirement for me to upgrade. Again looking at 2-3 year probably. OLED has taken much longer to arrive to monitors than I expected. We got the Dell one which looked like the best IQ monitor ever made from what I have seen, but that costs an arm and a leg and it does not have any Freesync or G-Sync or anything gaming related really.
