Ok so went to test drive a car, ended up putting down a fully refundable deposit which I can mull over for a few days, so wanted to get some vibes over whether its a very good deal (too good to refuse) or the type of deal I can get whenever...

So bit of background, my current car (6yr old citroen ds3) is starting to have a number of things go wrong and the bills are racking up. I want rid, but happy to wait till end of the year if there are better deals out there.

Car I test drove - VW Golf GTI. The sales guy said he could do me a great deal on the one in the show room:
2.0 TSI GTI 5dr DSG (03/17-)
Rear tinted glass
Review view camera
Tornado red
Velour cloth
Santiage alloys
GarX
Service Plan
Everything else required to drive it away (registration fee etc)
In total £28,500 (which includes £1500 cashback for finance which I'll pay off straight away).

So for an unregistered show room car, is that a great deal or can I walk away knowing that in 3 months time I'll be able to get something similar?

Is it a good deal for a decent spec Golf - not sure tbh, but is it a good way to get rid of nearly 30k no no no

You can get some serious cars for that money that make a Golf look like a complete fail in nearly everyway - get a decent warranty and something with Service history and you could still get a really decent Beamer, Porsche or Merc

Have a look at brokers such as Broadspeed and see what kind of deals they offer, that might help you get an idea. The base model without options from them is just below £26k

I’m not sure I would be comfortable dropping nearly £30k on a Golf personally. Then again I know for some a new car is the only option for whatever reason.

/waits for this to turn into a crazy Motors recommendations thread.

Broadspeed list the GTI Performance 5dr DSG at £26,731, so no, that's not a good deal.

If you're happy with just the plain GTI then that's £25,761 as a 5dr DSG.

Whilst you'd wait a bit for these, they'd be to your specification.

I'd be expecting to be sold a pre-reg showroom car for £25,000 or under. £24,000 or under before I considered it a 'good deal'.

And this is exactly why I posted... Thank you for the feedback; will cancel the order.

So for new cars, is broadspeed the place to be or are there a few other sites to look at, or any sites for nearly new / low mileage?

What bills has your DS3 had to make you want to throw almost 30k on another car ?

Had a £250 bill (fuel pump) followed by £2500 (oil pump, water pump, brakes, suspension brushes) and then £500 (suspension springs) all in the last 12 months. Extended warranty has coccove large portions but next year it won't be available due to mileage. Days are numbered before the next big bill drops.

With part ex it's closer to 20 than 30... But yeah lot of cash but I want a nice car and no nasty bills and costs. GTR would be amazing... But I can't just magic £10k and I can't afford the parts or servicing as a ongoing cost!

I kind of done the same thing 18 months ago

When my RX8 engine died I bought a brand new ford focus ST3 for 24k, I have no regrets apart from I wished I paid the extra money and bought the RS as it looks to keep it secondhand value far better..
