Looking to order a new car after summer so starting to research now...but I’m a bit stuck!

Wanted the new Panamera but I’m moving house next year so it’s sadly on hold. The compromise was a 640d gran coupe but starting to doubt it a little now due to the dated looks and interior - although i much prefer the styling of it over the new models (G30 etc). I get the impression the 6 series is coming to the end of its lifespan? Whats the thoughts, still a decent purchase?

Other half is pushing for an RR sport which I’ve not completely written off but just can’t see the justification for it. Coming from iDrive, RRs touch screen/nav system looks very poor too, even the 2018 one.

Requirements: 4 doors, >3.0litre diesel. Other half just got a TT so needs to be somewhat practical for the (small) dogs.

The G30 is a no. As i said earlier, not a fan of the new styling. My business partner has the G11 aswell which although an amazing car just isnt me.

Help appreciated as always!

Volvo XC90 or V90XC - look a lot smarter than most others

Also Mercedes CLS? - new one just released

I'd also be looking at things like the Audi RS6/RS7?

Volvo S90 (unfortunately 4 pot only), the new Audi A6/A7 or even A8 (v nice interiors and excellent touchscreen) or E class?

Personally 6 series interior too dated now so wouldn't buy a new one
What actually is your budget?

Volvo is a no go, not keen. Even the new S90 doesnt appeal.

Didn’t realise there was a new CLS, I’ll have a look. Mercedes have never appealed to me but the latest models are quite nice. I had considered an E class coupe very briefly but they just arent that special and I cant really tell the difference between the C and E class these days.

RS models are pushing it a bit too, i need to think of my mileage to some degree hence diesel preferably.

I’ve not Seen the new A7 in person, might swing by the local dealership and have a gander. The interior does look like something from an 80s TV show though...

What about a Cayenne or Macan instead?

I test drove the Macan last year, good drive but I couldn’t bring myself to get one. Same thoughts about the Cayenne, I’d rather have the Range Rover.

Used 640d. Get a 16 or 17 for standard fit LED lights and save half the list price.

What do you mean standard fit LED?

As above :)

Lexus IS300h? Petrol hybrid so motorway would only yield similar mpg to a normal petrol but in town will hel
Definitely look at the new A6/A7 interior in the flesh I was also skeptical then I went to see the new A8 at the dealer and it is very nice and a good step up over the older models

Both the CLS and A7 are brand new models, so should be at the top of your consideration list. You'll pay a hefty premium over a used 640d, of course.

I should've mentioned in the OP that I'm insanely fussy... I do spend a lot of time behind the wheel though so interior is typically top priority.

I've had a look at some of the used 640's and there's some very well spec'd 2017 models kicking around so liking that suggestion.

I think the RR and 6 are still top of the list despite all the suggestions so far.

Went and had a look around the A7 yesterday morning, still not a fan.

Although, not what I'm going for, I also had a shot of a friends E coupe, really like the interior and amazed at how quiet and insulated it is. I'm sure the same will apply, probably even more to the CLS - Although, seeing them on the road, I always think they look a bit 'old manish' which is why I didn't want to go down the 7 series route. Still one to consider though.
Considered a Maserati Ghibli or Quattroporte?
Yes to the Ghibli last year, didn't like it. Quattroporte is just a no.
Couldn't go near it due to the rear end. I'd rather get a standard 5 and be done with it.

Forgot I made this thread; Ended up writing off the 640d idea, I just couldn't part with the cash on a car that's starting to show it's age now and some of the used examples were still stupidly priced.

So....still thought the RR Sport was a bit OTT for what I need and couldn't go with the 740d so I ended up ordering a Velar :o R-Dynamic SE with some options, similar spec to this pic:

Just got word of the delivery date being moved forward so I'll have it a week on Thursday. :)

Never seen myself in an SUV but fairly practical and my house has turned into a bit of a project so worked out quite well, plenty of room for furniture :p

You bought a Velar yet discounted the G30?

I’m also confused as to how a 640 is “showing its age”

Enjoy it, it’s a lovely thing for sure, but I somehow doubt the ownership experience will be up to the - relatively poor - standards of the BMW’s (given recent reliability reports) which says something!
