I don't think simply saying a racist joke makes you a racist. On the other hand having pages and pages of the stuff is never going to look good.
What's the difference? Both the article and my example are people being 'racist' in private WhatsApp messages?
Does that instantly make us racists and **** stains?

No I agree, however where is the line. Me and my friends have had a WhatsApp group for as long as I can remember, easily over 5 years. The amount of pictures, memes, jokes, messages you can pull from it would be pages and pages. It could quite easily be used to paint us as racist/ sexist/homophobic, basically anything...
The sort of comment that betrays a slightly less 'banter' excused undertone though is where they talk about another student calling him a 'stupid little arse licking ****'. That's where you start to straddle the line from just a bit of banter to coming across as being a racist.
true, that one doesn't seem like it could be excused so easily
on the other hand including quotes from the film four lions as examples of "racism" is ridiculous

Yeah, without context of the conversations and what the individuals involved are actually like it's hard to judge them really, as you sssa where do you draw the line? I do think expelling students for messages in a private group is extremely harsh.

Why would you be dumb enough to post such things in a group set up for a uni group.
This isn't a private chat between proper friends.
People seem to be missing that bit, we have unofficial facebook and other work groups, I sure as hell would expect to get sacked if I posted such stuff in it.(not that I join such groups in the first place)

The grass; if you rocked up to work and he had started, would you seriously be comfortable working with him? Knowing he could just **** you over at any point.
Either way, being pathetically racist in a "banter" chat is stupid. Outing people for what was said in a private chat about no person in particular is incredibly vindictive, just look at how pleased he looks with himself in that photo. He knows exactly what would happen.

It's like a like most other things largely boils down to money, could damage the university's reputation and over time less students may apply hence less fees and Gov funding.

Yep...... i'm sure he 100% meant all those things like others did.

Perhaps go say such things to your HR team at work and see if they care.
Again this was not a private chat group like all off you assume.
It was an unofficial law group at uni,why would you post such stuff to that, when the world is filled with people who just love to do exactly this.
Yawn, do you ever shut up in these kind of threads, the guy was a snake, instead of grassing he should have sorted it out himself jelly fish folk.

Was it actually a law society group? It was called 'dodgy blokes soc' or something like that, which sounds more like a group for friends.
The snitch was apparently the one who founded the group but another member (one of the expelled) became admin and added more friends who participated in this 'banter'. A bit butt hurt maybe?
This 'banter' is on the border of cringe and shock, but seems to be between friends of equal stupidity without actual malice, although there does appear to be some boundary pushing which could possibly be due to hidden beliefs.
No one was hurt or affected by this until the snitch made it public.
I am surprised these muppets were able to pass gcse's let alone be at university if this is their level.
Many more things but I'm bored with this nonsense so giving up.

i would say they should look through the whole chat and count how many times each race was joked about. then if they are even numbers of jokes about each race then its very fair. equal pay, equal rights, equal memes?
