Is it racist to say gun/knife crime in London is predominantly caused by a certain race?

Is it wrong to say this?
I've just been subjected to a conversation at work, as I'm a Londoner, about the cities current knife/gun crime spree.(debatable)

I explained it's often black gang culture and tit for tat nonsense in certain suburbs/boroughs.

Apparently I'm racist. Am I not just stating an observation of fact. They are 95%male too....

How on earth is it racist?

I’d say it’s nothing to do with race, more down to the “wannabe gangster” culture which seems to be a plague on our youth of whatever ethnicity.

It doesn't, but I guess they could stretch what you're saying to mean that they might be committing these crimes because they're black or whatever.

As you've said yourself they're mostly male, mostly from certain economic/social backgrounds etc. so why only focus on the race.

There is nothing wrong with saying it's predominantly black men involved, if that's what statistics show. So long as we avoid the trap of saying their race is the cause.

It's not the cause, not really, but it is the demographic and if we ignore that we will never get to the root of the problem.

that is what the OP claimed, he's not said it was down to race, he has said it was down to black gang culture... if that is the case (I've not looked at the stats) then it could well be correct to state that it is predominantly carried out by a certain group.

That doesn't mean that he's implying some Engineering student from say Nigeria has any greater chance of being involved in this sort of crime - he's not said that race is the cause....

as long as you're referencing data you can back up, and not insinuating that their race is anything more than a correlation, then no.

however if you're insinuating that race is the cause for higher crime rates then yes.

On topic it tends to be young males in urban, less affluent areas.

Also this recent flare up is reminiscent of of London maybe 2 to 3 decades ago. Given that the black demographic in London has always existed in the entire time period, it would suggest it isn't to do with race necessarily.

It depends if it's speculation. To speculate for example white people commit the majority of acid attacks without actually knowing that to be true then that i believe would be classed in some category of racism. However if you are saying it as a fact then no.. it's a fact.

Another example could be that HIV & AIDS problem is not limited to but is largely concentrated within a couple of key demographics being gay/bisexual men & black African populations. It's not racist to say those black people are at higher risk of being on the wrong side of this example, it's merely a fact based on studies and science. I hope nobody would ever try to play the race card against that as also goes for the gay card and every other card there is.
