Apple CarPlay and Android Auto: worth the extra?

Apple car play I wasn't impressed with, very limited. Maps was rubbish, voice was rubbish and everything else offered no improvement over usual bluetooth media connection..

When was the last time you used it? It supports Spotify and Whatsapp now.

Carplay is crap. It's so limited with its app support, which is a shame. Apple won't allow Waze... But WhatsApp is OK?! How is that of any use to a driver?

The Spotify element is decidedly shonky, too. Or at least it was the last time I used it.

Android Auto is far more versatile. Having Waze on the infotainment display is awesome.

Weve got a Kenwood DDX8016 in our 350z, find it really useful to be honest. Yes the apps are pretty limited but music works really well. I have no beef with apple maps, sure its not as good as waze or googlemaps but works perfectly fine and I imagine they will be available at some point in the future.

For the sake of points or a fine for using your phone its totally worth it. I find the resistive touch screen works fine btw, much better than old ones ive used in the past, it cost us about £400. wouldn't spend more than that.

As mentioned above, you can use Waze with Ford Sync 3 - you have to plug the USB in so one must assume the interface is via Apple Carplay.

I'm currently weighing up going for an Android Auto headunit vs just pure Android headunit. Obviously the pure Android stuff tends to be cheap Chinese stuff, but the price difference isn't insignificant...

Android Auto is all you need and it works very well. It will get better over time as well as the software is update via the phone OS.

I'd agree if it could use any Android app, but part of me feels that the point of Android on a headunit is to use app that takes my fancy...?
But in the context of driving what more do you need than music, maps and Comms.

I’d probably get the Android headunit. Still would be fully featured if you forgot/lost your phone, or it was flat. You could (not saying you would) swap to an iPhone without losing your in car functionality, and as you say, you can use more apps (like OBDII software for real-time sensor monitoring etc).

You're not wrong...

For the Subaru it'd 100% be an Android headunit for that exact reason. I'm never going for audio quality in the Subaru, it currently has DAB, Bluetooth, aux, and a half decent looking touch screen, so I'd only change it for something that I can do "cool" stuff with, plus has DAB etc.

But for my Peugeot I'm weighing up the options - it has no DAB and no aux, which makes Kosta a sad boy.

I bet it will take ages to implement. It took Google long enough to implement Waze into AA.

I'll be surprised if it does as Apple specifically used the Waze / Maps icons on the keynote, this would tend to suggest the apps are probably ready to go already!

Thought I’d just revive this thread rather than start a new one. Just in the process of purchasing a used SEAT Leon and have the option of getting them to enable the Full Link system which would give Android Auto and CarPlay.

I’ve got an iPhone so would be CarPlay that I’d be using. I normally just have my phone attached to the dash using Waze but looks as though Waze is available on CarPlay now.

I can get it enabled for £180. Worth the money? Would be a wired only connection.
