Do they actually make 18 rated films anymore?

"video nasties" controversy in the '80s. Stuff got higher ratings.

That said, the violence in a Deadpool vs an 18-rated action satire from the 80s, such as robocop.... I reckon Deadpool would have easily been a 15 back then too.

Apparently telling jokes and keeping up banter in a light tone makes it ok.
It seems it's actually fairly hard to do an 18 these days without really going over the top, as I think I said earlier in the thread the BBFC are a lot more lenient on some things now than they were, as certain things used to be an automatic 18 if not a mandatory cut.

I've little doubt that Deadpool would have been an 18 if it had been released 20 years ago.

Cheeseyboy, back in the 80's certain things were an instant 18 or cut no ifs, no buts, and no allowances for it being satire as there was such a fuss about things that could be copied (headbuts, nunchucks etc).
I suspect that the language alone would have been borderline for an 18, as they relaxed the rules regarding that a while back.

I'd guess it's because of the internet. Graphic content and explicit language is so abundant and easy to find online that the world has become a lot more desensitized to it as a whole. Most channels wouldn't show anything 18 rated before 10-11 PM back in the day and you weren't going to find much on the shelves in the corner shop.

Mixture of films becoming more tame and ratings becoming more lenient. To evidence the latter point, even Scary Move was an 18 back in 2001 which was just a silly spoof film.

There must be meetings in post production where they go through a checklist for violent scenes and make sure the certifiable action is just the right amount of out of focus or out of shot while still having the maximum possible they can get away with.

Porn movies should be all 18+.

Have you seen the content of Cartoon Network - the anime channel for kids? it is a disgusting channel which I will never give my kids to watch.
The world has gone in the wrong direction with these things.
I have heard discussions around me that things will get gradually worse, hellish like, to the extent that if a person only says "I believe in God", he will be forgiven.

We need some good ETs to help us :(

Good execs know and will change the cut as they go depending on what rating the studio is aiming for. In territories like the US and UK you can even submit a cut, they rate it, then you can submit/appeal a couple more times to get the rating you want. It's not always about what you see, sometimes a cut is made "better" just by removing the sound effect (such as someone falling and breaking their back).

Unless your going after that 'R' rating like Deadpool and Logan did most studios now aim for a 12a or 15 at a push as it limits their markets / money.

Last film I saw that was an 18 at cinema was the latest Jigsaw reboot last year.

Have anyone seen the "Cube" series of films? That's Cube, Hypercube and Cube Zero. They're all rated 15, and I agree with the first two being 15, but I think the 3rd one (Zero) should have been an 18. This guy gets sprayed with corrosive acid and you see him disintegrating flesh from flesh which I thought was very graphic. Certainly the worst death scene I've seen in a film and it gave me a recursive nightmare for several months afterwards. Was 29 when I saw it.

You obviously haven't seen Bone Tomahawk :p

I think it's pretty much down to interpersonal graphic violence now that will make a film 18, torture, rape etc - but as soon as you add a fantasy element to that, monsters, super heroes etc it becomes a 15 as it's not "real" violence.

16 to have sex but 18 to watch it? That makes no sense at all.
