Hey guys,
I didn't get any requests in the monitor section and I know you lot are more friendly haha. I've just copy and pasted the same post below, cheers!

Screen would be used for gaming and photography
----------

I'm hoping you might be able to assist me in a search for a new monitor to complement my recently upgraded PC.
I've currently got a R7 2700 paired with a Gigabyte Windforce 1060 6gb.

Up until now, I've been gaming on a Toshiba 22inch television (50hz) at 1080p.

I've done a bit of research and asking around (I don't know much about monitors) and it seems my best bet would be either an ultra-wide or going for a 144hz screen.
I've currently found an option for both of these which looks appealing to me.
I'm hoping to spend £200-£270

Increased Hz screen: https://uk-store.acer.com/kg1-gamin...lmHoOWBBWsJBB8qxJLBnRzxgK3cmPFCQaAvMGEALw_wcB

Ultra-wide screen: http://www.lg.com/uk/monitors/lg-29UM68

If you have any opinions on either of these, or could steer me in the direction of a better one, please let me know!

Cheers!

What sort of games do you mostly play?

As you've mentioned photography (and therefore a need for a highly colour accurate display) I'd steer clear of TN panels. For your budget, this basically leaves you with VA - such as the Samsung C24FG73.

Hi mate,

I don't generally have a game genre I particularly play. R6 Seige, civilisation, heart of iron, Skyrim.. that sort of thing.

I don't quite understand the different of VA and TN, but I presume the ones I mentioned are the worst of those options?

Thanks for the help!

At the moment it's probably 80/20 gaming/photography.
So gaming is going to be the main factor. I'll take a look at what you've suggested :D thank you!

Would that wide-screen be better for photography than gaming then?

depends how you work, can use two programs and snap them to each half of the screen its , but normally with photography you get large resolution screens that aren't the best for gaming .

personally, look into the samsung screen, then you can always look into second monitor for photography , 24" 1440p (normally 24" 1440p is pants for gaming but suits for work use as most of the time you'll be zooming in or working on edits etc)

Ah okay, I'll look into the Samsung screen then! Might even go for the 27" version. Always wanted square eyes

he'd up, large screens and lower pixel count means you get LARGE pixels on the screen - to counter act this you normally turn Anti-Aliasing and AF settings on to smooth out jagged edges from the larger pixels but that also eats up GPU power - if your FPS is over the screens Hz rate then you've got room to play with, though then doing photography work- might not look as pretty and cant smooth out the raw image as it is out it appears from the capture - food for thought

sure they do a 24/25" verison though :)

For the majority of people, going from 60hz to 144hz is a very noticeable improvement - especially in FPS games. I certainly noticed a big difference. If you can, try one in person before purchasing.
I'm afraid there's not chance of me being able to try it!

Feel I may go with the 144hz Samsung you mentioned earlier!

Compared to that Samsung mentioned earlier, how does this one (S25HG50) compare, except being not curved?
That's a TN monitor - so will have worse colour accuracy and contrast. But it will be slightly more responsive for gaming.

But based on the games you play, an ultra-wide would also be a great option - for RPG like Skyrim, RTS like CIV etc. Makes everything more immersive.

Hmm that's probably what I need to be honest. I don't do enough photography stuff to warrant losing gaming potential for it.

Thanks for the answer!

Ahhh I don't know what I want :D
I thought I did but now I don't and it's all your fault!!

Currently, I've been using the two Toshiba TVs (which I'm sure are terrible screens), and my photographs have come out fine. So I'm sure a TN screen would be fine. I'll take a look more tomorrow. Is there a brand who does the best ones? Always thought LG did quite good screens

A good (but cheap) 144hz/1080p TN gaming monitor that OCuk sell is the LG 24GM79G. I've also attached the Samsung from earlier, a highly reduced G-Sync 240hz monitor and an IPS ultra-wide (would be great for RTS/RPG games)

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,112.42 (includes shipping: £22.50)

A brief summary of the pros/cons for each option:

  • LG - low price, average colour accuracy and contrast, FreeSync only (not usable with your GTX 1060), 144hz
  • Samsung - higher price, excellent colour accuracy and contrast , FreeSync only, 144hz
  • AOC - Even higher price, average colour accuracy and contrast, G-Sync (which will work with your GTX 1060), 240hz refresh rate - 240fps likely only achievable in e-sports titles (e.g. CS:GO) so perhaps slightly wasted with your gaming habits
  • LG Ultrawide - Also a high price, excellent colour accuracy, okay contrast, a 'HDR effect', FreeSync, only 75hz - but does have the extra horizontal screen real-estate which makes gaming more immersive, and is very useful for productivity.

You just need to decide if the extra features are worth the extra money for you. As I mentioned earlier, I'd steer clear of TN if you use Photoshop regularly, but if that's not a problem for you then no worries. ~£200 can get you a great gaming monitor nowadays.

That's very helpful stuff! Thank you for taking the time to look at this for me.

I must admit, that last LG one is certainly catching my eye with the ultra wide set up!
I don't feel as though Gsync or whatever it's called will benefit me more than immersiveness, so I really think that LG will benefit me the most!
