Hi my gtx980 card died yesterday and i now need a new card asap. the monitor i have currently runs 1080p
I wont be upgrading the monitor for a little while yet unless it stops working.

I am thinknig of getting a gtx1070 ti

Would you recommend getting this or is it overkill and just get a 1060 card.

That is not a bad price for a Ti plus 5 years warranty if you 100% can't wait till next gen I'd go for that. It'll be a good jump over the 980!

I had a Palit 980ti give up last week too. Goes into windows fine, but anything that uses it just crashed to a black screen and needed a hard reset (tried in 2 machines). Got an RX580 in it now, working fine.

A 1070 is faster than a 980. A 10780ti even more so. The new 1170 is rumoured to be about as fast as a 1080ti. So honestly I would wait if you can. It's only a few months away.

Got a feeling the 1170 is going to be a little more cut down than usual, no proof just a feeling. Should still be a really good performer though, but I'm doubting 1080Ti level...

What happened to the 980?

Regarding how the 1070 was as powerful as the big Maxwell chips, I think that was due to the die shrink more than anything so I won't expect to see as good an increase this time around, That said it has been a long time since Pascal released so Nvidia may pleasantly surprise us on the performance front again, but I then wonder if like Intel they're going to become complacent, giving us only little improvements until they need to do otherwise.
