Focus - 1.6 Petrol vs 1.6 DPF Diesel

Don't even consider an older diesel at this point. Older ones are being banned from London and it's likely to spread out to other cities as well, eventually moving on to newer ones.

Just avoid the 1.0 as those are the ones which have been failing.

Well yes, April 2019 will see the ultra-low emissions zone which will exclude all diesels registered before September 2015. For petrols it will only be ones from before 2006.

That's not what it will do at all. They are not banned - they are subject to a surcharge.

It isn't all diesels registered before 2015 either, it's all Euro 5 and older.

£12.50 a day. Which will mount up if your using it daily.

But the plans are then to expend the zone and include newer diesels. With an eventual total ban on diesels.

Where are the plans to increase the scope to include Euro VI compliant vehicles? Have you read the Government Clean Air Strategy? It outlines the framework for the introduction of clean air zones - and Euro VI cars are treated equally regardless of fuel type.

I don't disagree with your sentiment which is that old diesels are not worth the bother - they are not. I just don't understand why you feel the need to post inaccurate exaggerations as if it were fact.

i wouldnt even consider a non-ecoboost model
for a start the standard 1,6 is slower than the 1.0 ecoboost
and slower than the MK 2.5 1.6 as well which i know from experience is gutless

OP wants a diesel like MPG but needs petrol for the low miles a year he does and wants a little power
I have the opposite view to that I would only want the 1.6 which is bombproof in the older generations and wouldn’t touch the 1.0 ecoboost. There’s a 40 page thread on PH about failures etc including a few who have had 2 engine replacements before even reaching 80k.
There basically the same 0-60 time either way there both slow.
I often looked at getting a mk3 Focus as a runaround but the fact there are so few around with the normal 1.6 or 1.6 Turbo 180bhp I just gave up and bought another Mondeo ST220. The only mk3 that I would trust is the 1.6 or the 2.0T in the ST.

On a side not Op for your budget a mk2.5 with the 1.8/2.0 in Zetec S or Titanium trim would be the best option

That what what the mayor said. Though the mayor is Khan so...

odd about the ecoboost engines
my sister bought a brand new 1.0 ecoboost fiesta in 2013 and its still going strong

not sure what my brothers wife has, but she has a focus ZetecS 2017 ecoboost model

My 2012 focus 1.0 ecoboost is still going strong, and whilst it's not going to win any races, is still plenty quick enough and much better than the old n/a 1.6's

They are quite well known for cracking. This isn't just limited to Ford's 3cyl turbo engines though.

interesting, do you know if its just the early ones?
the new MK4 Focus (2019) is still using the 1.0 ecoboost

There was a recall relating to the cooling system. But I suspect it's just an issue with these tiny 3 cylinder engines in general. Most of the problems stem from overheating.

Well we just exchanged our 2013 1.0l for a new fiesta 1.0l and ever had any issues with overheating either. I spend quite a lot of my time in talkford and never once has there been any issues with this engine posted. Yes there was a recall with a hose failure but thats all. Forums are forums and can often skew the truth because of someone not looking after their car.

Thing is you won't notice with this kind of overheating. It's hotspots that build up and eventually cause things to break. Sensors won't see it so it will look normal until it goes.
