Is Porsche about to destroy the 'Ring record?

Wasn't the 35 year old record on a different (shorter) track, and that's why it's never been broken?

No the track then was longer for that, is was a full flying lap, not the shorter lap used almost all the time now a days.

All public days, and all production car records, are carried out on a shorter track.

Only by a lot of prior arrangement can you book the full lap, either that or take part in one of the few actual races held there.

That would be something! Not sure it'll be able to knock off nearly 25 seconds though

The outright record is 6:11.13, so Porsche will have to knock almost 12 seconds off to do a sub 6 minute lap, the record was set with a full ground effect car, so its unlikely even modern aero will match that.

i know ground effect was banned from competition due to it's scary habit of trying to kill people, but is it outright banned at the track level?

ie even if it was a one-off publicity stunt you couldn't use it.

The 6:11.13 was set on the shorter track (12.9) by Stefan Bellof in a 956. It seems Porsche want to break old records because they can. It hasn't been broken because competitive cars are mostly limited these days. The 919 is an unrestricted Le Mans variant so should be quite quick.
Andi.

4 minute 51 seconds based on bloke maths in this video.

I mean....I've done 3 in the Polo but this is still impressive.

I have said all along that a car like this would be EPIC on the TT course an DESTROY the bike time.....MASSIVELY. I know it's fighting talk for the men in leather....but facts n stuff.
