Cooler for older CPU?

OK... I'm making a short story long so please bear with me.....I had intended to simply replace and upgrade the mobo and cpu and memory and add a few peripherals ( SSD, extra HD and quite possibly a GPU ) to my existing case etc and may still do that or more than likely start over and build a completely new comp when I can eventually overcome my ambivalence and decide on which mobo and cpu/apu I want to go with, which will give the upgrade/new build legs to keep going for a while which I guess will be Ryzen based.

However, whichever way I go I will need a second computer and the current AMD Phenom 11 955 and mobo, ram etc from my 2011 build, although old are still working well and together with a spare case I have, if I add a sound card and extra ram will more than meet my needs for the use I will have for it BUT the existing stock cooler which originally came with the CPU makes a noise like a train ( known for it apparently) when it's been running for a while and on a hot day the sound wouldn't be out of place in a workshop which is no good for the use I will have for it which is primarily a bit of music editing via DAW, recorded on my 24 track machine.

So can anyone suggest a cheap retro-fit cooler solution for my old Phenom 11 cpu that will do the job which I can add to my parts list order for my new build? I realise that there are better more expensive solutions but I'd rather put that money into the new build as every time I total up for what I think I want, the budget ceiling keeps getting higher:(.

I was thinking something like a Coolermaster 212 et al plus an extra case fan or two might do the job...maybe one of you enthusiasts who had this chip in the past might have the answer and suggest a cooler that will do the job?

Cheers!

Not personally had a Phenom 955, but I think you're on the right track with a Hyper 212 (and likely won't even need an additional fan).
Alternatively even a cheaper and smaller option such as the Freezer 7 is likely to still do a good enough job (there are several reviews from Phenom owners suggesting it's a good improvement on the stock cooler).

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £56.88 (includes shipping: £9.90)

Coolermaster 212 has been pushed out of the running with many newer cooler cooling as well or better for similar or less money. {jemp, 955 uses AM2/+/AM3
mount which is very common.

I didn't really look at any others but now that you mention it, the AF7 sounds ok too.
To be fair, anything would be better than what's in place now so I guess either would suit as long as they will fit. The existing stock cooler looks much smaller than those two and as long as either will fit on the micro-atx board it should be fine and if I go for the AF 7, £17.99 plus thermal compound which I could also use on the new build, in the grand scheme of things, the cost isn't going to break the bank.:)

I noticed the other day that OCUK had 3 Akasa fans on offer for £17.99 which will swap out with the existing ones in my Akasa case so I'll maybe pick up a set of those as by the sound of it one of the case fans has definitely seen better days and for what they cost, you can bet if I don't replace it now, it will go down when I least want it to.

Thank you.
This is why I like the OCUK forums...you can usually get all the info you want in almost an instant!

Looks like there is a far bigger choice than I expected. To be honest I didn't think there would be much of a selection given the chip and board are now so old. With the exception of the cooler, this machine which I built back in early 2011 has been exceptionally reliable, never once having let me down and while it may be old technology, I still have a use for this machine or the bits even if I am upgrading or building something new.

OcUK has Phanteks PH-F120MP 2-pack for £14.99 .. that is £7.50 each for s very good fan

and PH-F140MP 2-pack for £16.26 on special .. that is £8.13 each for a very good fan

I know what you mean about old tech. I'm, still running i7-920 @ 4.2GHz and i7-980 stock as well as newer 6700k stock. We tend to forget that most computers are store bought factory built systems that even new are only about the same as our 7 years old systems.

I got an AF7 and while it was reasonably quiet, it wasn't silent even at idle. The fan just had a hum to it at low speeds.

Whereas I got hold of a Hyper TX3 Evo and it was beautifully quiet. Also marginally easier to mount do to being a more conventional design.

If you're going to give that PC heavier load Phenoms can produce lots of heat and that tiny 92mm fanned AF7 would struggle to keep it cool at least without making some ruckus.
Especially when that marketing hype fan leaks air to sides because of no frame.
(instead of all airflow cooling fins)

Hyper 212 would be lot more effective.

That's going to have issues regardless of installing direction by either protruding to DIMM slot space or to uppermost PCI-e slot area:

While likely the best 120mm fanned heatsink without issues with DIMMs or PCI-e slots wouldn't be much more.

Sorry, but 212 is severely out-classed these days by so many better and lower cost coolers.

I suspect lttlejoe will get a lower cost cooler like Materhorn Pure, but I included Atlas because it's a good cooler at reasonable price. Depends oh how tall the RAM (DIMM you call them) is, but Atlas is offset back so front of Atlas front tower is 50mm from center of CPU and RAM sockets are 55mm from center of CPU .. so no RAM interference issue. Fan centered on front clears RAM up to 38mm tall and could be set even higher or fans could be mounted as pull / pull instead of push / push.
