House of Fraser shutting stores

I just mentioned that in the New Look thread, and M&S have already announced they are planning the closure of 100 stores

More pound shops on the High Street. John Lewis will be next.
Not sure they will (I’m no retail expert) just they had someone talking about this on the radio yesterday and they were saying John Lewis, Harrods and Selfridges had all done really well staying up to date with store layouts and what they stock etc and profits for them were double digit percentages.

Well didn't see this coming...oh wait. I'm hardly surprised to be honest - my wife worked at the Oxford St branch last year and I actually created a thread on GD regarding how bad working conditions and management was for new employees. Told the wife they wouldn't last a year if it remains this way. Most of the concessions there rake in about £300-800 odd a week, which is really poor. Sometimes more if some clown decides to buy an overpriced bit of clothing. Main management just don't give a damn about their staff.

That is a lot of jobs. I wonder how many are created in the meantime, the media is quick to report on the doom and gloom aspect of the economy. There must be something positive going on out there!

High street retail really seems to have gone to the wall back home!

-Bunnings
-Poundworld
-Toys R US
-Maplin
-Next

There are probably many more I havent included!

How exactly does job creation work. Is it the Gov or business leaders of private companies that create them?

It's a case of getting bums on seats sort of thing and trying to somehow fund it all?

Main management just don't give a damn about their staff.

I have friends at the Lincoln store, apparently they were supposed to be briefed yesterday, never heard anything and then found out this morning by the press releases online. Poor form that.

Loads of companies do this. The level of communication between management and staff is very poor.
Usually staff find out via the media.

Yeah wont be long before John Lewis suffers too I'd expect

Amazon really are taking over world wide retail

Very sad indeed. It's one of the few big stores I like shopping in where I live. And checking out the ladies at the perfume/makeup counter always worth a detour :D
Online is nice but a lot of things are just good to see up close, check out the quality etc. Debenhams is close by but last time I went in there stuff was all over the place, close together, difficult to get to. Not a nice experience.
Some of the staff at my local store have worked there for many years.
