Looks like I need to travel to Paris next week for work and due to my schedule I'll be staying two nights (yet have some free time during the days). So my girlfriend might come along. Problem being that it's so last minute it's basically £200 return on the Eurostar. Fine for the company, but not for her.

Can you get tickets on any other sites? I've never travelled on Eurostar either, I'm assuming that it's easier than flying seen as flights are basically coming up at the same price (discounting budget ones out of Luton, Stansted etc). Any other tips for Eurostar?

Yea it's annoying, I'm off to Disney Land in a few weeks time and fingers crossed I don't have to go into Paris to catch a connection into Disney.

Tried Lastminute? I've managed to blag tickets for under 200 quid with hotel. Seeing prices for next week around ~150, train only.

You tried Eurostar Snap?

No idea how it works but my sister has used it to get cheap tickets before (£25ish one way), you've got to be flexible though.

What specific date/train are you looking at?

I get discounted Eurostar through work. Not sure about such short notice bookings but can check.

I think she'd be looking at going Tues afternoon/eve then returning Thurs sometime with me.

Snap sounds good but I'm not willing to login via FB, hate that... :(

Just checked and I would have to travel as well if I get the cheap (£30 each way) tickets. Sorry couldn't help.

Well it’s all gone wrong. The girlfriend for some reason didn’t like the idea of coming to PAris in case she was “stuck on her own waiting for me to finish work” or some such, so she’s not coming anyway :( DId I mention it’s her birthday? So I’m now going to Paris on her birthday... on my own. Lol. Totally in the doghouse :o

Anyhoo, thought this thread was a good place as any to ask about the Eurostar seen as I’ve never done it. It says check-in 30-60mins before departure, presuming that means go through security etc yes? What is there at St. Pancras beyond security? Or is it a glorified waiting lounge? If I want to get breakfast, use the loo etc is it best to do that before you go through?

Also, can you take bottles of water onboard or have they cracked down like airlines?

What’s Gare du Nord like for the return leg? Big, chaotic? Need to leave extra time to find your way? Thanks :)

You have to book well in advance to get cheaper tickets.

Not sure why you are in the dog house if you have to be at work.. There is loads to do in Paris on your own whilst waiting for someone.

All that happens is your luggage gets x-rayed and you walk through a metal detector. They don’t care about liquids like when flying.

Both st Pancras and gare do nord are big busy and chaotic. I would get there an hour before your train leaves as sometimes the queues are crazy.

You can get food or go toilet before you start queuing to go through turn styles or you can wait until you have gone through security etc and get into the main waiting lounge. There are toilets, shops and eating places in there.

She’s in Paris! Go shopping, coffee and people watch.

If it’s her birthday then pay for it yourself? Call it her birthday present?

Honestly this turned into a major argument. The schedule for my event was that I needed to be there Tuesday at 3pm for a few hours, then the event is Wed evening. Pretty cushy way to get 2 days and nights in Paris. But no, not interested :( Women...

As a sidenote literally everyone else I spoke to was like "yeah I'd definitely go and mooch around Paris on my own!" - as would I!

And thanks for the info Ocean Breeze.
