wanted to paint our fence (it is ours on the deeds) a soft grey, so we proceeded today to paint one part of the fence and I thought I would pop my head over next doors and noticed it had seeped through nearly all of the knots on the wood! Out of courtesy we’ve stopped and have let our neighbour know. We’d really like to continue with the plans to paint it grey and I doubt our neighbour has plans to use the same colour.

So how do you paint featherboard without seeps?

(FYI we used a brush, prefer not to spray and we only used light brushing and wasn’t too heavy with the paint)

I would suggest using knotting, it's used to seal knots before painting etc to prevent discolouration coming up through the paint. I expect it would be a good enough seal. If not, something more aggressively like glue or lacquer. But then whatever you put on will seep through!

So I’m pretty much shafted unless I can get our neighbours to agree to the same grey

If it's your fence then you can do what you like they have no say in what colour it is, as long as it's not offensive! If you want you can take the fence down and have nothing or a piece of string!

Yeah but obviously don’t want to start a war maybe in a few years haha.

Good job they’ve been quite understanding and just told me to carry on!

Anyone who starts a war over someone painting a fence they own isn't worth bothering with. If they hate it they are perfectly entitled to street there own fence!

Yeah but when they're direct neighbours, it's not so easy to **** them off and live it down for 5-10+ years. A little diplomacy goes a long way.

I not saying I wouldn't have had a quick chat but it would have been to tell them what I was planning to do not ask permission!

I think you could be overthinking this.

I've got a black fence, Cuprinol shades, neigbour recently painted their side brown, some seeped through, black drips on my side.

Got out the black paint again, and dabbed over the drips, along a 10 meter run, took 10 minutes :)

Maybe ask them nicely you would like to paint the other side of the fence without taking it down, use a spray gun so its done quicker....

If they say no you can just pretend its fine on their side or let OCD take over :)
