Hey guys,

I need your help as I am stuck and I dont really know what to do. I have got a problem with my laptop as there are something that are making to run really slow so I would need to investigate it to find out what the problem is and where the trouble is coming from.

I have installed windows 7 on my new hard drive as I think there is something wrong with my old hard drive as it is running slow when I boots into windows but i am not really sure if it is the hard drive or the CPU. However when I installed windows 7 and used my laptop for a bit, I ran the program to test my CPU temperature to see how hot it is. I found that my cpu temperature are overheating which it is between 60c to 85c so I shut it down and I ran the memtest but it got crashes during the test so I can't find out what the problem is.

Can you please advice me with what I need to do and how i can find out if i have got a bad cpu, memory and a bad hard drive?

What is the laptop model and CPU? I have an Asus ultrabook with i7-7500U and load temperatures peak at around 70-85°C briefly. Laptop CPUs tend to end up a bit hotter because of much more limited cooling capacity, and they're rated for this.

If you replaced the hard drive then you've basically rules that out (provided you used a new one).

Memtest crashes implies memory problems. Did it crash totally or just errors?

The laptop model is Toshiba Satellite A500 and the model for the CPU is Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo P7450 Socket P (478).

If I have bad capacity on my laptop motherboard, is it possible if I can replace it or get a new motherboard with new CPU and RAM?

When I replaced the hard drive, it works fine as its run really quick but the other hard drive are slow. Do you think if the old hard drive have got bad sectors or if it is about to die?

Yes, memtest got crash totally when I ran it. I have been told that I could have bad memory but I have got a problem with my CPU as the usage get higher and it get hotter when I run into windows for more than 5 mins?

I have just run memtest again with each memory stick. It's working fine as there is no errors and it did not get crash totally but it will crash totally when I run two memory at the same time.

I guess there is something wrong with the CPU?

the motherboard is likely to be faulty, a replacement if you can find one will not be worth it
your laptop is 9 years old, buy a newer one

How do you know its the motherboard is likely to be faulty? I can turn my laptop on as its working fine so I dont think its the motherboard?

Sounds like you may need to clean the heatsink of the laptop (Fluff etc). Also the thermal paste my have dried out. This can be replaced quite readily, plenty of guides online.

yeah it sound like it. I will have to take it out and have a look. It will give me sometime to sort things out before i will have a quick look.

If I find the heatsink get full of dust I will clean it off, so will my cpu return to normal without cause overheat and run the usage too high?

But what if it still the same as where it is now? could it be the CPU problem?

If I find the thermal paste is dried out? where i can get a new one from?

How I can test my cpu fan to see if they are working ok or not?

thermal paste

a cpu will thermal throttle to protect itself.

max temp for your cpu is 90'c

Hardware monitor or speedfan to monitor fan speed, if temps are maintained below 90 then they are working. Laptop is quite old by the looks of it so could just be an age thing ;)

I would clean the whole laptop out. As it's 9 years old most components inside will have dust / fluff all over. Clean the fans and replace all thermal pastes.

Just doing this will improve things a lot.
