He has got my old EVGA 780 in his machine and he's wanting to upgrade. He's sold off his console at CEX and has £600 burning a whole in my head as he's constantly asking me to help him upgrade. :p

Now I've told him to wait for the new cards...1180 etc...but he's 13 and wants an upgrade now.To be fair he's been waiting A while and was all set to get a 1080 but he said he would wait. Now it looks like August time I'm thinking he gets a 1060 6GB uses that for a few months then sells it on MM and buys a new card around Xmas time.

He's at 1080p ...what would you suggest? Is there a faster AMD card than the 1060 for less?

Cheers

Honestly wait the 1060 is faster than the 780 yes but it's not miles and miles ahead to the point it's not worth the hassle of selling the 1060 in a few months time etc etc. Personally I'd wait if not and second hand is an option I've seen people sell 1080 Tis for the £600 Mark. Brand new? 1080 that will last for several years

For a 13 year old running 1080p a 1060 6GB is far more sensible than a 1080.
I agree but if he has that amount surely a 1080 for long activity plus should he ever ask to change to higher res he is covered.

I just think get best he can with the budget he has which is 1080 if not that a 1070Ti

I only game at 2560x1080 but still opted for a 1070

An RX580 or a GTX 1060 is barely an upgrade to a GTX 780. Have a quick look in any of kaapstads bench threads and you'll notice that at 1080p at least, there is practically nothing in it.

I'd be looking at GTX 1070Ti/1080 or vega 56. Currently the 1070Ti would likely be the best bet as prices are reasonable compared to the others. Personally, I went for a vega 56 back when they were new and on offer last year (£390) and it round about doubled the performance of the 780.

We always think that when we're our own critics :p

Like you say, it'll get him by til the next-gen is well out and about with deeper DX12/Vulkan features :)

Yeah I couldn't stomach dropping 350-400 on a Gtx 1070 when the new cards are coming...at worst he gets new shiny and a stop gap sidegrade until the new gen cards...:)

Had a 780 and if it didn’t break I would still have it, I had to get something so went with a 1060 and in the games I play it’s a good 20fps faster at 1920x1200 resolution I use.

I would not have bought it if my 780 hadn’t of broke but it was cheap enough to justify it.

£200 GTX 1060 6GB he'll get a sidegrade for £100 after he sells his 780 and the xtra vram will help...he can then wait for the new cards and see what's about then.

Ok I installed the 1060 benched it against the 780 in his pc with firestrike and loaded up some games...Far Cry 5, watch dogs 2 and a few others...

I'm amazed just how good the 780 still is after all this time compared to a 1060 6GB....although he could play on high with the 1060 it was still not hitting a constant 60 fps....so he's now gone for a 1080..

What he has learnt though is how to bench and install a GFX card so all is good. If the 1080 lasts him as long as the 780 then all is dandy...

He's been patient and was desperate to upgrade so although the new cards are coming they will probably be closer to £600 and offer little over the 1080 for his outlay. And there is no clear indication of when the new cards will arrive so c'est la vie

Only thing is, is his cpu good enough.

Some games he will see a big gain with the 1080 but other games he may not due to a weaker cpu?

Just to add, it’s good to see someone comment on just how good a 780 still is.

I can't remember off hand how much difference there is between the two but something around the 25% mark would be my estimate. In some games, there will be quite a noticeable improvement, perhaps more in terms of minimum fps, though in others it will be a fair bit closer. Anyway, as a stopgap, it should suffice.
