Hi,

Girlfriend is looking to upgrade her 05 Polo, currently looking at 1.0 ecoboost fiesta's and focus's. Budget is 10k and needs to be around SE England. Requirements:

Petrol - does 12-15k/year
5 door
No bigger than focus

She does a mix of motorways and a roads to commute, anything else we should be looking at?

Couple exampls of what she is looking at.

Don't spend ten grand on a fiesta when the new one has been out a little while now, especially given the interior was never updated.

Tbh the same will shortly be applicable to the Focus too, though if you pick up a new enough car and the right spec it'll likely not drop in value any worse than it would otherwise. It also has a slightly more modern infotainment system so will seem more modern for longer.

Every competitor of the focus is worth looking at tbh, very few "bad" cars out there any more

SEAT Leon, an FR might be slightly out of reach but you should be able to get a decent-spec one with the Tech Pack (LED headlights etc) with your budget easily.

Could always wait a bit for the latest gen Fiesta and Polo to drop into budget, they’re worth it if you want something pretty new. Fiestas are currently £11k+, about £12k+ for the Polo.

Plenty of good cars in the Focus’ segment though.

Fiesta bigger than a Focus , no idea where you got that information from but its wrong

Mk7 fiesta

Length 4,040 mm (159 in) (hatchback)
4,406 mm (173.5 in) (saloon)
Width 1,734 mm (68.3 in) (w/o mirrors)
Height 1,483 mm (58.4 in

Mk1 focus

Length Hatchback: 4,175 mm (164 in)
Saloon: 4,380 mm (172 in)
Width 1,700 mm (67 in)
Height Hatchback and saloon: 1,440 mm (57 in)

So...longer, wider, taller.

But...how...why?

The mk1 focus is like 20 years old.

My wife was smaller 20 years ago.

You are comparing a new fiesta with the old Focus, i was talking about the same years

yes i am aware the Fiesta is a lot bigger than the old fiestas
heck even the corsa and golf have grown over the years, in general most cars have got a lot bigger

Not longer- 4,040 vs 4,175mm (saloon isn’t available here). 43mm difference in height, who cares about that? That leaves 34mm difference in width without mirrors, but 1,734mm isn’t going to be problematic.

wtf what does a 20 year old hatchback have any relevance when choosing a car for £10k?
