I have an old pc :(

Its doing well, but i think its about time i let it retire somewhere.

Its a Intel Core i7 2700K on an ASRock H61M-GS
AMD Radeon R9 3800 4Gb ram
16 GBytes of DD3 ram a 250gb ssd and enough storage drive space.

And a corsair GS600 Power supply.

Im looking to get a new Graphics card for this that i can then transplant into a new machine down the line. Probably nearer christmas.

Are there any limitations that i should know about for fitting a new card in my old machine. Also will that power supply be good enough to carry over to a modern build?

Hi Count,

Regarding the graphics card you just need to make sure the PCI express port is compatible with which ever graphics card your looking at, you want a pci express x16 for the best performance.

The power supply may or may not give out enough juice, again this will be listed as a requirement on the graphics card.

On the plus if you look to replace the power supply and Graphics card both can be utilised in a new pc.

Do you have any thoughts on which Graphics Card your looking at?
 
I really dont know. The prices seem to have gone up so much for the higher end. I suppose all im looking for is something that will be ok for a couple of years and that can run newer games well. Budget would be no more than £300 if i can help it, and preferably nearer the £150 mark. Is there a good comparison site people recommend?

Is a good starting point to see how older cards generally compare to newer cards.

As such to get a reasonable upgrade from your 4gb 380, you realistically need to look at a 1060 6gb or better.

I wouldn't normally recommend the 3gb 1060 (as the 6gb has more shaders and with more beam should have more longevity), but at the current prices it's also an option (costing barely more than a 1050ti)

Id pretty much decided on either getting a 1060 or a RX 580 leaning more to the 580 for freesync. But haven't decided on which model. All the extra doodads confuse me.

How much better than the Red Dragon is it? Hadnt seen that when i was looking.

Right looking myself, looks like its 75hz better, im not sure how much of a difference that will make im guessing not much, So looks like its the cheaper card for me unless anyone comes in and tells me otherwise 8-) also the Dragon needs a 500w psu to the 600w of the Devil, so theres that.

If you are willing to spend more than your original budget i would go with a 1070 personally, an extra £30 and you can get this

the 1070 will be faster than the 580 and allow you max out settings at 1080p or have med-high settings on a 1440p monitor.

The card should run no problem on the PSU, the 1070 has a minimum recommended PSU of 500w.

How old is the PSU? did you get it when you originally built the system? although it shouldn't be required, it may be worth looking at a replacement if it is old and you are looking at a new system build.
 
You might struggle it looks like the 1070 uses about 500W, so once you added the rest of your systems needs your going to probably be looking at 700w PSU's.
