Noob question.

I want to be able to run my laptop off my superwide monitor but use my mouse and keyboard from my desktop and keep my laptop out the way as it won't be needed apart from obviously running.

I'm probably better off getting one of those small units that you can plug everything into like they have in smart offices.
By smart units do you mean a dock, or a separate computer? A dock is handy but maybe overkill for your needs.

You can achieve what you want with cable extensions and/or a USB hub. A usb hub will likely have a cable on so you can place the hub somewhere handy to plug peripherals into. The laptop can stay tucked away, with its video output plugged into the monitor. Obviously don't put it somewhere it can't get airflow to stay cool, like a drawer or closed cabinet.

Can you connect your mouse, keyboard etc into the monitor itself? Most monitors will act as a usb hub meaning you don't need to plug much in elsewhere. Depending on connections etc available you're likely to end up with just one USB and one HDMI or similar.
