GTX 780 3GB upgrade for nephew

I'm amazed just how good the 780 still is after all this time

Its because most of the big review sites either use old benchmarks rather than rebench the card and/or insist on running them with old methodology for the boost and the performance isn't really right - giving the perception they are a much slower card than they really are if coupled with a decent CPU.

That said I found the VRAM limiting more recently and there are 1-2 games they do fall down hard hence the 1070 which was a pretty decent upgrade performance wise despite my 780 being one of the better ones.

Only thing is, is his cpu good enough.

Some games he will see a big gain with the 1080 but other games he may not due to a weaker cpu?

Just to add, it’s good to see someone comment on just how good a 780 still is.

He's running a i7 2700k so 4 core 8 thread 3.9ghz

I can't remember off hand how much difference there is between the two but something around the 25% mark would be my estimate. In some games, there will be quite a noticeable improvement, perhaps more in terms of minimum fps, though in others it will be a fair bit closer. Anyway, as a stopgap, it should suffice.

It wasn't enough in my book...

Something is not right - a GTX1060 can easily hit 60FPS on FC5 on higher settings.

Looking on YT,the only time I can see it happening is if the CPU is not that great.

The same goes with WD2 - on high the GTX1060 should be fine.

WD2 also shows a decent performance boost with more CPU threads:

It was certainly faster but it wasn't consistent hitting 60fps...all the time...I'll see how the 1080 performs and I'll maybe overclock his i7 2700k up a bit

EDIT: just texted my nephew the far cry test was ultra...not high....

OK I didn't read all the threads here but I don't see the point in replacing his card with a 1060 when there is no real benefit. The 1070 is noticeably faster than a 780 so I would go 1070,1070ti or 1080. Really I don't think there is much point in waiting. I don't think the 11 series is going to be readily available at good prices before the end of the year but if you shop around, 1080's are.

I went from a 780ti to a 1070ti and am very happy with the performance jump. I'm still using a 3820 i7 @ 4.7ghz and it runs fine.
