Hi, I'm looking to make an upgrade to my rig that first started with help on here 7 years ago. The CPU and motherboard have been in since the start and I'd like to replace them with something that will keep me going for a while. Also I'd like to move from DDR3 to DDR4.

Here's my current setup:
  • Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM
  • Asrock Z68 PRO3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
  • ZOTAC ZT-P10700B-10P GeForce GTX 1070 AMP Extreme 8GB GDDR5
  • Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
  • Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5 inch Basic SATA Solid State Drive
  • Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM
  • Phanteks P400s Tempered Glass Mid Tower Case
  • EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G3, 80 Plus Gold 750W
  • Gelid Tranquillo CPU Cooler

  • AOC AGON AG241QG 23.8" TN LED Monitor G-Sync, 2560x1440
  • AOC AGON AG241QX 24-Inch Gaming Monitor, 2560x1440
I'm thinking a budget of up to £750ish.

Usage wise it's for 1440p gaming with the ability to watch a twitch stream/netflix on the second monitor.

if your not selling your system, dual rigs is pretty cool for streaming as doesn't effect performance .

also depends if you want to stick to Intel or AMD for more cores for streaming ?

Do you mean 2 machines? As much as I'd like that it's not really an option because of space.

Also I dunno if you thought I meant I would be running my own stream but I actually just meant I'd sometimes like to have somebody else's stream or a netflix video running whilst playing certain games.

I don't really have any allegiance to Intel or AMD, just whatever is best value for money, longevity and works best with the other parts.

Thanks for these, would you say there is much difference between the Intel and AMD CPU's here? Is it worth the bit extra for Intel?

breaking down into good middle tier range (aorus has wifi)

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £685.43 (includes shipping: £10.50)

no secret Z370 is to be replaced and superceeded by Z390 - some Q4 roadmaps have Z370 removed . Aorus H370 shows pretty much what most z390 boards will have but they will have much beefier VRMs compared to Z370 boards to handle 8 Core Intel .

ryzen system's are normally cheaper, included 8 Pack ram as its Samsung B-Die and ryzen can be funny with its ram

I'm leaning towards the first Ryzen set you listed, even after seeing the benchmarks being slightly higher on the Youtube comparison video thewanted has posted.

There's also the possibility that I'll be doing some programming on the machine too so having the extra cores is appealing.

hopefully now AMD is making a huge impact on the CPU market and Intel being forced to use more cores... multi core coding will take hold better and stronger :D

fancy a challenge with ram overclocking , should be able to hit 3600hz with AMD Ram Calculator

Thanks. I went ahead and ordered this combo, the CPU even dropped another £10 :D

I'm a bit concerned about whether or not I need some more fans in my machine now.

Currently I've got the 2 x 120mm fans which came with the P400s case - an intake on the front and exhaust on the back. These are connected to a controller built into the case as opposed to the motherboard.

The front has space for 3 x 120mm (or 2 x 140mm) fans. The rear only has space for 1 x 120mm. The top has space for 2 x 120mm (or 2 x 140mm) fans.

The top also has 2 magnetic dust filters and 2 covers.

I was wondering whether it would make sense to buy 2 more fans and connect them to the X470. Another intake on the front and another exhaust on the top, removing the cover and leaving the dust filter on.

Do you have any thoughts/recommendations? Thanks again.

@jackbauer123

With your £10 saving. .

All three at the front . Move the stock I take to rear back top :)

Possitive pressure to keep dust out and nice airflow

Appreciate the quick response!

Is that recommendation based on leaving the stock intakes connected to the case fan controller? And positioned to the rear and rear top as exhausts?

Also I was just wondering whether £10 for 3 fans suggests they might be loud or not as efficient. Would I be better off spending a bit more on 2 x 140mm for the front perhaps?

Apologies for all the questions, I've never really dealt with fans before. I've always just gone with what is already in the case.

there are 20db it seems, would take that with a pinch of salt. I'd just plug them straight into the mobo or use a 3 Pin Y split into on mobo header - theres 8 fan headers so at no real shortage :D

im prob one of the worst for fans suggestion as i have 9 Silent wing 3 120mm in one case alone at £20 a pop

Hmm. I don't mind spending a little bit more if I'd benefit from doing so.

Would 1 of each of those be-quiet fans, 1 at the front with the stock intake and 1 at the top near the stock exhaust be better than the 3 pack configuration?

to be honest, for the price! id get the 3 pack, slap them at the front and control the speed in bios and see how you get on. should be able to run them slow but still give nice air flow

more, but still £15 cheaper then 2 silent wings

Thanks for the advice. I'll go with your recommendation and see how I get on. 3 intake at the front, 1 exhaust on the back and 1 exhaust on the top.

I'll probably leave the stock fans connected to the case fan controller and then connect the new set to the mobo.

Let me know how you get on

Sure, should be arriving today hopefully before I get home from work.

Its now almost a completely different machine from when I first built it, just the HDD remains. I had a quick look at the spares I've got and I'm debating trying to put together a second PC with my old parts for my nephew to use.
  • Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM
  • Asrock Z68 PRO3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
  • Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
  • Gelid Tranquillo CPU Cooler
  • ATI Radeon 7950 HD 800MHz 3GB PCI-E HDMI Windforce 3X OC
Cheap case, PSU and a HDD/SSD. Could be a nice little project.

Fortnite ! Will be great for him !!!

Fortnite ! Will be great for him !!!

Yeah he loves Fornite on the PS4 so I'm sure it'd be ideal.

So the good news is the fans turned up yesterday. The bad news is I realised there is only space for 2 of them on the front because of the HDD cradle.

I've put the 2 stock phanteks fans on the front as intake, still wired up to the case fan controller and they're running at full speed.

And I've put 2 of the new ones as the exhausts on the rear and rear-top spots.

I think 2 x 140mm ones might have fit on the front even with the cradle in the way but I think a bigger SSD will be on the horizon in the near future so I'll probably take the cradle out anyway.
