Thai cave rescue - One of the divers has died

I think they've got a 5-month wait until the water level drops.
But the chamber’s oxygen levels are at 15%, heavy rains are inbound starting Sunday and there are fears sinkholes might form above the chamber they’re in causing it to collapse.

It’s a dire situation. The elation of finding those kids alive is slowly eroding each day as the risks increase. A rescue seems like the only solution but as we all realised today even the best can succumb to the dangers.

Has anyone asked the question as to why these inappropriately dressed kids were doing going into these tunnels in the first place?

I suspect the football coach will have a few questions along those lines to answer, if/when he gets out.

Cave diving is horrifically hard and dangerous - tried it once, never again. Have done tons of wreck dives and stuff, but caving is just horrifically different.

Pedant: Ran out of air, not oxygen. You rarely dive on oxygen as such, and certainly not at any depth.
Yes, I'm no expert but all the discussions are that cave diving is hugely difficult and different to 'normal' diving.
The boys apparently can't even swim and they are talking 90 minutes under water, that is a very frightening thought.
Andi.

That's what has really confused me, how on earth did they get through some of those really tight spots?

Crawled through before they were flooded.

Presumably either as part of their little expedition or when forced too after water levels started rising.

There is a documentary on Netflix called diving into the unknown about some cave divers rescuing their friends that died on a dive with them. It's very interesting and gives a glimpse into how dangerous cave diving is even for people with experience.

The fact that 2 experienced divers just panicked and died proves that. This was at much greater depth than these kids though.

I thought maybe they could sedate the kids, strap full face breathing masks on them and helmets to protect them from bumps and then have divers bring them out. No chance of them panicking and getting themselves and or others killed.

I just hope they figure something out.

Despite all the training based around rescuing a diver (a big part of the sport diver qualification) one of the instructors told me if it ever came to it and their buddy was seriously panicking they would just swim away rather than put themselves at risk

I think the key phrase there is 'seriously panicking'. One seriously panicking diver can quickly lead to two dead divers.

If you have to push them away, get some space between you and then try and regain control of the situation, it's better than both of you drowning in an underwater wrestle.

Details are a bit sketchy but to me it sounds like they could do more.

Firstly on the air situation, cant they just tow an air feed line through the tunnels and pump air in?

Secondly on the evacuation. Not sure how many kids there are but extract one at a time with a team of divers. Lay guide ropes with underwater lights on through the tunnel system. The kid doesnt need to swim, just be towed along. If panic, then put them under anesthetic for the extraction.

How many pumps have they got in the cave system? If its only a few then get more. There should be a huge amount of experience available in the world from mine dewatering which is commonplace.

Just tow a 4km air line? when was the last time you tried 'just' pulling 4km of hose? They're putting one in as we speak but it's not exactly the sort of thing where the guy at the front just grabs the end and pulls it along behind him.

I'm sure they don't need telling to 'just get more pumps' either.

Amazing insight you have there, why not fly over and offer them the solution, I can't believe all these experts haven't realised this yet.

Best get over there and tell them how it should be done ey heh

Why can’t they just send in some highly trained dolphins and swim them out

It’s like they don’t even want to try!
