Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I've been losing connection recently (SH2 in modem mode) - a power cycle for the router sorts it every time, and I don't think the neighbours are having the same issues. I assume it may be a hardware issue in the hub? Reluctant to ask for a new one as they'll send me the SH3, and I deliberately chose to stick with the SH2 when we moved to avoid all the latency spikes that have been reported and I think still not fully fixed yet.

you all have my sympathy and to be honest I have not looked but are other companies like BT, sky getting similar issues like Virgin customers? I don't think to this extent as virgin, but Everywhere i look i see constant problems with their internet. Does virgin have the most unreliable internet service in the Uk? Really there should be a regulatory body that can pressure them from providing this service. The problem is they are bending the interpretation of the compensation required by law to be given for interrupted service. Giving you £5 off is just not enough. If the fine is not proportionate enough then they will just continuer to provide this service with limited fix.

anyhow my advice to anyone with virgin problem

after now 10 engineers and talking to the centre in India, must be now 40x if not more and and having the worst internet on planet earth, a engineer came out and explained the problem to me.

so they send out service engineers which frankly are powerless lot as they cant do much if you are having problem at the cabinet, all they can do is fiddle some levels. You want what is called a Network Engineer, the call centre in India cant send those out only the Service Engineer can book these. This really nice service engineer came round and really had a go at people who book service engineer and hey presto someone came round next day. The gentlemen was network engineer, he explained to me A LOT with my internet. He ended up completely rebuilding my box, the power supply was shot, the amplifier on the box was gone, my levels were 50% under what they were, he rebalanced everything fixed my problem so far and was a great guy too. He also explained that he is only certified to touch that cabinet and my address and cabinet that provides me internet are wrong on their system and he had been going to wrong place.

I am now thinking to cancel the line pull, as i suspected I don't think it was the line was at fault.

I hope their service improves because when the internet works its fantastic fast but when its out ITS PAINFUL to get fixed.

This is my internet today

I am assuming its still lot of issue with my internet as others have such nicer looking graphs?

Well seems something happened over the past 2 weeks and seen great improvements in the graphs.

EDIT: Change happened on the 3rd July.

Havent seen any difference although I am not playing any latency sensitive games.

Quite likely to of had the latest firmware for the Hub 3 applied.

How do we apply this latest firmware? Quick google search indicates only for 350mb customers, is this correct?
VM apply the firmware, usually on an area by area basis. The .603, now .608 firmware, was initially just applied to customers on 350Mb and those that were part of the trial (which is how I initially got the firmware but now no longer a VM customer). It does seem to be rolling out to customers that are on lower tier packages now. My dad is on 100Mb and had the update about 12:30am on Tuesday.

Guess what's getting cancelled today. I'm not even bothered about the so called 350mb speed I'm 'supposed' to get (it rarely goes over 250mb on wired and 180mb on wireless). Will be switching to Sky purely for reliability, speed is irrelevant when it drops on a daily basis.

*note I was away 12/13 July so didn't reset the router once it had obviously died.

I'm on Virgin media 350MBPS and I've always connected at 350MBPS, recently my speed has dropped down to 200MBPS, I've done all the usual troubleshooting like restarting etc

I'm using the hub in modem mode but never had an issue before

You are so lucky you can move, unfortunately for me I am stuck with only virgin in the area and no other fibre provider.

Is it possible to pay a company to draw lines for a resident house to a cabinet that is fibre acceptable and not too expensive. Is there a way to check whether cabinets near me are fibre capable? I think virgin have a monopoly around here.

i would be willing to pay up to £100 internet a month but not to stay with virgin. I really hate this service provider when it comes to internet.

Possible (i’ve switched cab’s before), but unlikely. For me it happened after a discussion with the BT planner on-site as the construction bill we were discussing was into 5 figures and had already involved digging up a large section of the main road through a village. After 5 minutes it became clear all of that could easily have been avoided by using a different DP behind the property.

I just got one of these USB Wi-Fi adapters for my laptop as my laptop only has a 2.4Ghz card built in.

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/tp-l...ireless-usb-adapter-archer-t2u-nw-121-tp.html

Unfortunately not from overclockers because I was given a high street gift token as a birthday present.

It works on 5Ghz but I'm not getting full speed. Using Ookla Speedtest, my phone always gives me around 165Mbps download and 10Mbps upload, but the laptop is only giving me between 92 and 101, mostly 92 and sometimes lower. This is using two different browsers and two different speed usb sockets. Is there something I can do in my SH3 that would improve this or is the adapter just not very good?

Net behaved over the weekend whilst I used it and last night was the first weeknight without problems, spoke to VM this morning and they've pushed the fault fix date back to 23rd now. Hopefully they've sorted it but want a few days testing before closing it off.

The fact its USB isn't ideal, it could well be that causing the limited speed. Are you sat close to the router when comparing both? You could try a replacement wifi card inside the laptop, they are usually pretty easy to swap out but just need to check which type your current one is as they differ in connection type and length of card.

Yeah, I'm in the room next door to my router when testing the speed on the laptop and phone, so it should be the same. And many people reviewing it are saying they're getting full speed, so I don't understand why the USB should be a bottleneck for me. I had considered swapping out my wi-fi card as that's what I did in my last laptop but I had hoped the USB would be a quick and easy way of doing it. Thing is I doubt the shop would take this back now that that outer shrink wrapping has been removed. Just tested again and got half the speed of my phone. 81Mbps v 160Mbps, absolute crap. I wonder if I should reboot the router?

Hmm, I'm getting 120Mbps now. So not too bad I guess. But clearly inconsistent as it gave slower speeds earlier in the day.
