Designer babies could be approved in future, says medical ethics panel

Humans will need to genetically engineer ourselves or at least use some form of genetic screening for embryos if we don't want to slowly but steadily accrete harmful genetic mutations in our collective genomes now that we have largely subverted natural selection

But we look after our weak and we have largely eliminated "survival of the fittest". That goes against natural selection and eventually will have consequences. People are breeding who would normally not get the chance to and that disrupts the natural progression of the species.

In West Europe, Russia, the USA (and probably South America), you can easily find a beautiful partner.
But in Eastern Europe, the beautiful women are with extremely high self-esteem - they either look for footballers or rich (business)men, or you should look for a beautiful teenager.

There are classes - athletes breed with athletes or equally successful other persons.
Beautiful women breed either with rich men or athletes.
It is the most difficult for not-so-beautiful and not-very-successful men - they breed with equal women.

Biologically perhaps not, technologically and socially we've far surpassed everything in scale and intensity on this planet.

Evolution is not a single issue problem, like so many see it as.

I have read that the Queen doesn't like potatoes. And I am going to ask - is there anything in potatoes that is potentially harmful, so the Queen avoids it?

Nightshades, which potatoes and tomatoes are varieties of, are actually not great for some people. Maybe she is one of those people.

Or is secretly in communication with the spirits of Irish past.

What is the Irish past? :)

Let's hope so. I was thinking in the lines that the ellite has special, selective diets with selected foods, and the ordinary people are left to have not so special diets.

Good in one sense.

Potentially catastrophic in another.

Imagine - you engineer perfection but add a back door. A kill switch.

Things start to get pretty scary when you consider how this could be used in nefarious ways, which let's face it - it probably would be.

If you can engineer weakness out, you can engineer it in.

not necessarily, it would make sense for example for it to be carried out on the NHS with regards to the risk of certain diseases

as for elites, there are already differences between different social classes etc... if anything something like this, if widely available, could achieve the reverse

I mean I think we're still talking about editing/making minor changes, it isn't like you can have a complete re-write - currently a kid born to two low income, low IQ parents will be more likely to have a low IQ and have a low income themselves (not that IQ is a great measure in general but it does seem to have some predictive power w.r.t success and is partially inherited) - might be better to increase the chances that the kid is a bit taller, bit smarter etc.. and give them a better shot at life

there are potential metal health benefits there in giving people a better shot at life, reduction of suicide etc.. etc..

if there is some potential genetic element increasing the chance of obesity then that isn't just a cosmetic/elite thing but can have knock on effects on health, mental well being

I guess the other thing is that if it isn't allowed/widely available here then the elites will still have access through traveling to some other jurisdiction where it is allowed - for example I know of someone who traveled overseas with their partner for IVF because they wanted a girl for their second child

I mean more say we discover a way to modify intelligence then after q few generation we end up with "only people with intelligence mod 2.0 or above are allowed to apply to med school" or not even alowed simply can't compete to get a space etc
