No-one charged in 9 out of 10 crimes - Home Office
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-44884113

I was just searching around the net and stumbled across the above article. 90% of crime now doesn't make it to the charging stage. So only 10% of crimes get charged and make it to court.

I typed in my post code and it says crime in area Greater Manchester as gone up 70% (nationally 36%). While crimes charged have dropped by 38% (nationally 16%).

These figures are both staggering and shocking. What is happening out there? How have we ended up in this situation?

Huge cuts to police budgets and actual police.

We are currently at the lowest level of police since 1996.

The Tories and particularly Theresa May as home secretary, cut their budgets by 20% in real terms.

Doesn't help the fact that the police on the frontlines have one hand tied behind their back with red tape by those in charge. They seem to be more bothered about being seen as politically correct than actually targeting certain demographics that seem to commit the vast majority of crime in certain areas.

This may come off as being a bit of a rant but I would guess at a multitude of things.

Firstly police forces patting themselves on the back and under reporting crimes to make their statistics look good and get bonuses for that, if this is the case then as a government i would look and say oh crime is falling why do we need such a large police force. Then we have the fact that as a country we don’t actually want to send anyone to prison, there are numerous repeat offenders that just get a caution and off they go to do the same things again. A blind eye being turned to certain crimes do to profiling, which would be effective, becoming a race issue rather than removing these criminal elements from society. Under funding of the police, reducing the amount of front line officers. An imbalanced police force, much with many of our public services there are too many chiefs and too few of the people effectively operating beneath them. There is an expectation of promotion in this country just for turning up to work, if a position is not required then one should not be created just to appease people. Unfortunately once people are pushed up the ranks there is not a cull like in the private sector when a service becomes too top heavy, look at RR recently they are having a clear out to reduce costs, this can’t be said of our services. If this was the case there would be a substantial amount of cash freed up to fund more junior/support staff.

We ideally need to come to the cold hard realisation that the prison/rehabilitation system is too imbalanced and some people react better with a different deterrent strategy.

There are probably many more issues but that’s a start.

Who would have thought that massive increases in crime and a drop in prosecution rates would have a correlation with equality massive funding cuts to police. No one could have seen it coming, they'll be telling us lack of rain causes rivers and reservoirs to dry up next.

I think, in part, that the figures reflect the shift in focus towards terrorism offences and to be fair the public generally want this. The resource can only be focused in one area at a given time and so some crime will inevitably go unattended.

How can you expect the Police to cover real crimes when they spend so much time and resources on people saying bad things to one another.

I reckon so much money gets wasted on stupid stuff like Maddy McCann, investigating cliff Richard, russian poisoning, trying to lock up David Duckenfield, homeless man from Manchester bombing, Grenfell false victims... The list goes on!

indeed, make sure you don't quote rap lyrics on twitter or make a joke video featuring your girlfriend's pug dog

Most crimes are presumably just he said she said kinds stuff when it comes to fights and bulagaries are basicaly impossible to solve unless the perpetrator is already on databases and an idiot

By "lowest level," are you talking about actual numbers, or the ratio of number of police officers compared to the population size? If the former, that's quite worrying, as the population has grown from ~58 million to ~65.6 million over the last 22 years. It would be a different matter entirely if police work was being made radically more efficient in dealing with crime by using modern technology, that meant less officers were required.

Society needs an effective police deterrent to function properly, right now it seems we don’t have one. It’s a combination of problems and not just the fact police numbers and budgets have been slashed. There is no detterent even if caught and charged, sentences are a joke.

Actual numbers:

And in actual fact that article states that official records began in 1996, but it's likely we have the same amount of officers now as in 1985 (when the population was lower again than your figure)
