I’ll soon be moving to a new house which has a nightmare lounge with wooden floors, a fireplace and two awkwardly placed doors. I’m already resigned to losing my surround sound setup so I need some info on a very decent soundbar as a replacement.

Currently I have a UHD player, XBone, PC and Virgin Box plugged into my amp so I’d like the soundbar to be able to cope with these too. One thing I’m not 100% sure about is how a soundbar handles surround sound input - does it try to do an approximation or compresses all the channels into just two?

TIA

How about the LG SK10Y, pricey but meant to be one of the best soundbars available at the moment :)

If I had to go back to a soundbar its what I would get! Even has the ATMOS up firing speakers built in.

They don't. They do have some pros but for me pros of separates mean they are worth it. Upgrade sub no problem. Upgrade amplifiers no problem. Hdmi new spec no problem. Need lots of inputs and outputs no problem. One item stops working no problem. Sound to go well above reference level and bass to damage my property no problem.

Superb 2 channel and home cinema sound surpassing odeon cinema yup.

Minimum I would go in main room would be budget avr and speakers like q acoustics. Soundbar in bedroom sure as quite impressed with parents qtv2 soundbar

I'll be going down the same route soon.

Hopefully I will start building an extension soon. (Spare room&Home Cinema)

So thinking about downgrading the living room to a sound bar.

Would love to demo a few as I have only heard a sonos one.

I’m not actually looking forward to giving up my surround sound set up as I’ve spent a decent amount of cash on it. However, in my case anyway, I don’t think I’m going to have much choice! Of course things may change once I’m actually in the house. The frustrating thing for me is that it’s really just the rear speakers that would cause problems. Maybe need to see if I can somehow shoehorn in a couple of two rear wireless speakers.

The wiring is an issue too - wooden floors, solid looking skirting. Really, I don’t think the room could be any more surround sound unfriendly than it currently is!:D

Try the Sony HT-ST5000. Richer Sounds should let you demo it or give free returns if not. I had the problem where soundbar was my only choice. Did a lot of research and ended up with this and I love it.

I've got the Yamaha YSP-2700 sound bar and it does a good job at simulating 5.1 or 7.1. It's not as good as the real thing though.

Dali Kubic One with Dali E9F sub sounds amazing for music and movies £1200 but worth every penny to me we was in same situation not having a big living room so wanted something decent in Soundbar for movies and music and in the Red grille it looks the part to. Everybody who comes loves it. And doesn't do any false processing to virtual 5.1 just stereo sound
