There is no doubt taxing on line is so easy - I got to thinking about it and I can remember having to go to the tax office to do it - mine was down Broad street in Birmingham - Because everyone had renewals at same time there was always queues outside the door - Then you could do it at post office - again queues outside the door - almost like pension Monday - Computerisation certainly does have it's benefits.

What happened to the tax relief for having a diesel car - it's nearly 200 quid

Cool story bro :p
I hate the new online tax method compared to the old paper disc that you had buy in the post office and display for the simple fact that more people abuse it by not taxing there car and are getting away with it. Seen some figures on the news last year and I’m sure it was nearly a million more un taxed vehicles on the road since the online system got introduced. Unless a police car catches you there’s no consequences

Why would a paper disc make a difference to this? The police or an ANPR system still would have to catch you.

It's also easy for the public to check if a car is taxed via their phone.

I think the number of average Joe's who'll check online is far fewer than the curtain twitcher crowed who are waiting to grass up their annoying chav neighbors. And then report it to whom? The police aren't responding to some crimes these days, I doubt they have resources to go nab a million cars from the road, as evident if those figures from Dav4 are correct.

Because you had to have proof that your car was taxed by showing the paper disc. I’m sure traffic wardens could report you for not displaying one and it was easier for police to see if they were walking past.
Now it’s just online unless you have a police car behind you that flags it up and pulls you your not getting caught. There’s hardly any traffic police around now.
Anpr’s do nothing. I’ve worked with plenty of people that don’t pay tax or forget when it runs out “mainly women” and have never been pulled or fined.

Display it to who exactly? This was fine in an era where technology didn't exist.

Police don't use their eyes to check if a car is taxed and insured now. Paper discs or not.

There was never tax relief for diesel. There was lower tax for lower co2 cars which there still is for cars registered before March 2017? Nothing has changed in that regard.

Still don't understand why the "system" can't automatically report when cars are untaxed or uninsured and send out fines etc. Surely that should be the benefit of having it all on one giant database?

What is it?!

Im almost certain my 640d was £250 to tax, which oldly enough my E43 is the same as its a 2017 car, so it seaked in before the tax changes were brought in.

edit: Just checked and the E43 was a bit more to tax at £290

Then it wasn't a Euro 6 one.

Most expensive tax config on a pre 17 640d was the GranCoupe 19/20 inch wheel variant at £195.

Actually you're right, it wasnt £250 as I remembered how rediculously (comparatively) cheap it was to tax considering the power output and how ridiculous the suggested mpg was. It must have been the XJ that was about £250 which was a Euro 5

Tbh I thought that's how it worked, the system already sends out reminds surely a fine is an easy addition to this?
